The character first appeared in Nintendo’s Donkey Kong arcade game in 1981 as “Jumpman.” This was long before he was the world-famous plumber we know today.
Segale was a local real estate developer who leased warehouse space in Tukwila, Washington, to Nintendo of America.
According to FOX 11 Los Angeles and ComicBook.com, Segale had one altercation with Nintendo of America president Minoru Arakawa over late rent checks.
The company reportedly felt a profound impact from the tense exchange. After the incident, Nintendo’s developers decided to rename Jumpman as “Mario” in honor of their landlord.
David Sheff later included the story in his book Game Over: How Nintendo Conquered the World. It is a history of Nintendo’s ascendance in the global gaming industry.
Developers described Mario Segale as short, stocky, and dark-haired, and they used his appearance to shape the character’s design. This combination of features would later become the template for the Italian-American plumber. Nintendo would turn this into one of its most valuable global icons.
Segale never sought publicity for it, and over the years the link became famous.
“I am still waiting on my royalty checks, you might say,” he joked in a 1993 interview with The Seattle Times about the unexpected legacy.
It was one of the most memorable quotes from the story. Mario Segale passed away in 2018 at the age of 84. However, his name will forever be linked to one of the most successful entertainment franchises ever.
Today, Super Mario is the face of Nintendo and one of the most recognizable fictional characters in global pop culture. He headlines dozens of games, films, merchandise lines, and theme parks.
A simple rent dispute gave rise to one of the most famous names in entertainment. Mario is a nostalgic icon for many gamers since childhood. Still, for the history of gaming, the tale is also a reminder that sometimes the biggest legends can start with something as mundane as unpaid rent.
