Thekabarnews.com—The Indonesian finance minister, Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa, said he was recently at a hospital. However, he explained that he went for a regular medical check-up after suffering lower back pain and not because of any serious health condition.
Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa said he was in good condition and did not require hospitalization. He made these remarks while speaking at the Ministry of Finance office in Jakarta on Monday, May 4, 2026.
“Yes, I went to the hospital, but I came out. It was a routine checkup; everything is normal,” he said, as quoted by Wartaekonomi.
He responded after rumors about a serious illness and hospitalization sparked widespread public speculation about his health. Some also discussed extremely high blood sugar levels.
Some reports said his blood sugar was at 600. This raised concerns about his physical condition and ability to continue to work.
Purbaya firmly refuted the allegations by saying that his blood sugar level is now stable and normal.
“It’s safe now—118, back to normal. I think everything is pretty excellent now, right?” he said.
He also told of prior episodes of lower back pain, saying he had experienced back problems that had needed medical treatment. The treatment included eight injections.
But he said the condition has now improved considerably and no longer interferes with his daily activities.
“My back is already back to normal,” he said.
Purbaya also responded with humor to wider rumors about his condition. The speculation included reports that he was too ill to get out of bed and might lose his government post.
“There are so many rumors, right? They said I was too sick to get out of bed and that I was going to be fired,” Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa said with a laugh.
He issued the clarification to calm public concern and end speculation about both his health and his position in the government.
Health rumors about senior government officials can spread quickly and lead to wider political speculation, especially on issues of leadership stability or cabinet reshuffles.
Purbaya’s direct response seems to be an effort to avoid unnecessary uncertainty and to reassure confidence in his ability to continue his duties.
Given his position as one of the key players in Indonesia’s economic management, many view his public reassurance as significant. This is especially true with the current fiscal policy decisions and national budget planning.
Purbaya, for the moment, insists there is no cause for alarm. He says he is still in excellent health, active, and fully able to continue his duties as finance minister.
