Cyber Media Guidelines
Guidelines for Cyber Media
The Kabar News provides accurate, responsible, independent, and accessible journalism across its digital platforms. These Cyber Media Guidelines set out the editorial standards for news articles, opinions, photographs, videos, reader contributions and other content published on TheKabarNews.com.
We base these guidelines on Indonesia’s Press Law No. 40 of 1999, the Journalistic Code of Ethics, and the Cyber Media Reporting Guidelines issued by the Indonesian Press Council (Dewan Pers).
1. Area of Application
Cyber media refers to journalistic activities carried out via the internet and other digital media. The Kabar News may contain content that:
- Breaking news and ongoing stories.
- Original author reporting and interviews.
- Investigative and explanatory reporting.
- Reporting based on data.
- Analysis of news.
- Opinion and contribution articles.
- Photos, graphics, sound and video.
- User comments and other user-generated content.
The Kabar News keeps its journalistic material under editorial review and professional standards.
2. Accuracy, Checking and Balance
The Kabar News strives to verify material facts prior to publication. Journalists and editors need to assess the credibility, relevance and reliability of sources and supporting evidence.
Where possible, reports involving allegations, disputes, controversy or potential harm must include confirmation from the parties directly affected.
In the case of publishing information in urgent matters involving the public interest, before all parties have responded
- The source is identified and considered credible.
- The information available has been reasonably verified.
- Publication is necessary to inform or protect the public.
- The report clearly points out which information is unconfirmed.
- The parties concerned are given an ongoing opportunity to respond.
If a response is received after publication, The Kabar News may update the original report, and clearly identify the material change.
3. Developing and Breaking Stories
Breaking news can change as new facts come to light. A first report should not be taken as the final or complete report of an event.
The Kabar News may update headlines, facts, quotes, photos and supporting information as part of continuing verification. Material updates must be provided when they materially change the meaning or context of the original report.
Speed does not exempt one from the obligation of information verification and not to harm.
4. Attribution and Sources
The Kabar News always identifies sources when it is safe, legal and consistent with responsible journalism.
We properly attribute information from official documents, public statements, research, news agencies, other media organizations, and publicly available records to its source. Wherever possible and appropriate, The Kabar News will provide links to original or authoritative sources.
The Kabar News does not claim to have scooped another publisher’s reporting. A report that is based in part on external sources must add meaningful editorial value, for example, through verification, context, analysis, comparison, local relevance or additional reporting.
Anonymous sources may be used if:
- The information is of public concern.
- The source has personal knowledge of the subject.
- Disclosure would place the source under a credible threat.
- The information is not reasonably obtainable from the record.
- The editor knows the identity of the source and approves the protection.
