Artificial Intelligence Use Policy
The Kabar News may use artificial intelligence (AI) tools to assist in certain newsroom and production activities. AI is a tool for assistance. It doesn’t replace journalists, editors, original reporting, source verification or human editorial judgment.
This policy sets out The Kabar News’s responsible use of AI, our commitment to accuracy, transparency, privacy, copyright and the trust of the public.
Our Guiding Principle: Responsibility for People
All news articles published by The Kabar News are subject to substantive human editorial control.
PT Satu Hati Indonesia writers and editors are entirely responsible for the accuracy, fairness, legality and ethical quality of the contents they publish. This responsibility can not be outsourced to a software vendor, chatbot, translation service, automated system or algorithm.
You will not publish AI output simply because it is convincing and grammatically correct.
Usage of Artificial Intelligence
But human oversight can improve AI tools:
- Generating research questions or preliminary ideas.
- Organizing notes and public information.
- Transcribing recorded interviews.
- Translating material between languages.
- Checking spelling, grammar, and readability.
- Suggesting headlines, summaries, or metadata.
- Identifying possible gaps that require further reporting.
- Categorizing or searching documents and datasets.
- Supporting search-engine optimization.
- Creating internal outlines or production drafts.
- Improving accessibility, including transcripts and alternative text.
An AI helper cannot substitute you in verifying all facts against reliable sources.
Human Review and Editorial Review
Journalists or editors must fact-check any AI-generated content before publication:
- Factual accuracy.
- Source reliability.
- Context and completeness.
- Fairness and balance.
- Fabricated names, quotations, statistics, studies, or events.
- Defamatory or discriminatory statements.
- Copyright and attribution concerns.
- Privacy and data-protection risks.
- Language that may mislead readers.
- Compliance with the Journalistic Code of Ethics is also a concern.
AI systems often generate false or hallucinated data. Content Detection AI This is AI-generated content and should not be taken as a primary source or evidence that something happened.
Sources and reporting
AIs cannot conduct a live interview, attend an event, authenticate a document or go out and do field reporting.
If an authoritative or original source supports the factual claim, do not cite the AI system as the source. Journalists and editors must verify all AI-provided information against documents, firsthand sources, official registries, reliable datasets, or trusted published sources.
The Kabar News does not knowingly publish false quotes, fabricated sources, or AI-generated eyewitness accounts as fact-based journalism.
Language Help/Translation
Multilingual journalism could be enabled through AI-assisted translation. Post-editing of machine translation output by a human translator is necessary to ensure it is an accurate translation. Conveying the nuanced meaning, correctly rendering names and titles, handling quotes, legal terminology, cultural context and overall meaning.
Rewriting or translating an article from another publisher is not original work. We properly attribute all external reporting to its original source. Furthermore, The Kabar News must add some sort of meaningful editorial value, e.g. verification, context, analysis or additional reporting.
AI-Generated Images, Audio & Video
AI-generated or heavily manipulated visual and audio content does not prove a real event.
We clearly label synthetic media used for illustration when a reasonable reader might mistake it for authentic documentary material. For instance, artificial intelligence illustrations.
- “AI-generated illustration.”
- “Illustrative image created using artificial intelligence.”
- “Digitally altered image.”
- “AI-assisted visual; not an authentic photograph of the event.”
The Kabar News will not utilize synthetic media to portray an individual doing, saying, attending or being in a situation that did not occur.
You cannot alter the meaning of news photographs and documentary images.
Disclosures & Transparency
The Kabar News will disclose when it has utilized AI in such a way that it has a material impact on a reader’s understanding or assessment of a piece of content.
We do not require individual disclosure of routine spelling, grammar, transcription, formatting, or technical optimization tools when they do not materially alter the journalism.
Disclosure should only be required where:
- A substantial part of the published text was generated by AI.
- An image, video, or audio recording was synthetically created or materially altered.
- AI performed a significant analysis that influenced the article’s findings.
- Lack of disclosure could reasonably mislead readers about how the content was produced.
Disclosure does not endorse inaccurate, misleading or unethical material.
Privacy and Confidentiality
Journalists and editors must not enter confidential, legally protected, unpublished, or personally sensitive information into external AI systems unless The Kabar News has approved those systems and implemented appropriate safeguards.
- Confidential-source identities.
- Unpublished interview recordings or transcripts.
- Personal identification documents.
- Medical, financial, or legal records.
- Passwords and access credentials.
- Internal editorial deliberations.
- Embargoed documents.
- Information that could expose a source or vulnerable person to harm.
It is the fundamental duty of journalists to protect their sources.
Copyrights & Intellectual Property
Do not use AI tools to hide plagiarism, to recreate copyright work without permission, or to circumvent proper attribution.
Journalists and editors must review copyright, licensing, attribution, and ownership requirements before publishing AI-assisted text, images, audio, video, or graphics.
Prohibited Uses
AI-generated content must not falsely claim or imply that a living artist, photographer, journalist, publication, or other identifiable creator produced it.
The Kabar News prohibits the use of AI to:
- Fabricate facts, sources, quotations, documents, or evidence.
- Publish content without meaningful human review.
- Impersonate a real person deceptively.
- Create false photographs, video, or audio of actual events.
- Conceal plagiarism or replicated content.
- generate defamatory, discriminatory, or unlawful material.
- Manipulate public opinion through undisclosed automated identities.
- Produce fake reader comments or artificial engagement.
- Bypass source verification.
- Reveal confidential-source information.
- Make final editorial judgments about guilt, credibility, or public interest without human oversight.
AI-generated content corrections
All AI-generated content published by The Kabar News will be subject to the same correction and right of reply policy as any other journalism.
When the editorial team identifies an AI-related error, it investigates the cause. They will also correct the incorrect information and make the material correction available as appropriate.
The Kabar News may restrict a tool, modify a workflow, require additional editorial review, or suspend the relevant use of AI. We may impose stronger restrictions in response to repeated or serious failures.
Policy Reviews
AI technologies and standards evolve. Therefore, The Kabar News may update this policy to reflect new risks, newsroom practices, legal requirements and advice from the Indonesian Press Council.
