Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham made a surprise crossover from basketball to mixed martial arts as a guest Octagon Girl at UFC 329 in Las Vegas. UFC CEO Dana White said organizers arranged the cameo less than a day before Indiana faced Las Vegas. Surprisingly, organizers arranged the cameo just eight minutes before Cunningham entered the Octagon.
Thekabarnews.com—WNBA star Sophie Cunningham surprised basketball and mixed martial arts fans when she was a guest Octagon Girl for UFC 329 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on Saturday, July 11, 2026.
The Indiana Fever guard removed her shoes, slipped into a black outfit, and entered the Octagon with a round card in hand. Furthermore, she stunned everyone with a walkout alongside UFC Octagon Girls Chrissy Blair and Brooklyn Wren.
Cunningham also recreated the long-pointing gesture that recently turned her into a viral sports meme. Her cameo in the UFC quickly gained traction on social media, enhancing her public profile beyond professional basketball.
UFC CEO Dana White said Cunningham’s participation was not a part of a planned promotional campaign but was spontaneous.
White said he and Cunningham were friendly before the event. He also told reporters that White didn’t hesitate when she asked to walk the Octagon.
The UFC chief said organizers made the decision only eight minutes before Cunningham appeared. Moreover, she popped out around the co-main event fight between Paddy Pimblett and Benoît Saint Denis. Pimblett won that fight in the first round.
“We’ve created a relationship, and she was here tonight. When she walked in, she goes, ‘Oh, I wanna walk around that.’ I said, ‘Then you’re gonna walk around it,’ White said.
The Associated Press confirmed that Cunningham served as a guest ring-card representative at an event headlined by Max Holloway and Conor McGregor. Officials declared Holloway the winner after McGregor appeared to injure his knee early in the fight.
Cunningham’s presence also attracted additional attention because she barely had time to switch back into basketball mode. The Fever were scheduled to play the Las Vegas Aces at 9 p.m. ET on Sunday, July 12—that’s less than 24 hours after UFC 329.
The official WNBA schedule listed the game at Michelob Ultra Arena in Las Vegas. That allowed Cunningham to attend UFC events without going to another city. However, the unusually quick transition from entertainment to elite competition still surprised fans.
Cunningham is a 6-1 guard from Missouri who joined Indiana before the 2025 season and agreed to return for 2026. Indiana Fever announced her new contract before the current campaign. Her UFC appearance exemplified the growing crossover between women’s basketball, combat sports, and online entertainment.
What started as a casual request turned into one of the more talked-about moments of UFC 329. Moreover, it gave Cunningham another viral platform just hours before transitioning back into her primary role on the basketball court.
