JAKARTA, thekabarnews.com – Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto appointed Suahasil Nazara as finance minister on Monday, September 14. He replaces Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa in the latest reshuffle of the Red and White Cabinet.

Prabowo administered Suahasil’s oath of office during a ceremony at the State Palace in Jakarta. The appointment covers the remainder of the government’s 2024–2029 term.

“Before I administer the oath concerning your appointment as finance minister in the Red and White Cabinet for the remainder of the 2024–2029 term, I will first ask you,” Prabowo said at the ceremony, according to a video published by Metro TV.

Suahasil then pledged loyalty to Indonesia’s 1945 Constitution and promised to comply with national laws while performing his duties responsibly.

“Before God, I pledge that I will remain faithful to the 1945 Constitution of the Republic of Indonesia and carry out all laws and regulations in the service of the nation and the state,” Suahasil said.

He also pledged to “uphold the ethics of office” and perform his duties to the best of his ability. The ceremony concluded with Suahasil signing the official inauguration record as finance minister.

Suahasil arrived at the Presidential Palace complex at about 2:44 p.m. WIB. He was wearing a black suit and a light-blue tie. He confirmed that the Presidential Secretariat had contacted him about the afternoon’s cabinet agenda.

“I was called,” he told reporters before the ceremony, without disclosing the position he would receive.

The government had not publicly explained the reason for replacing Purbaya when this article was prepared.

Purbaya had served as finance minister since September 8, 2025, meaning his tenure lasted just over a year. Before joining the Cabinet, he chaired Indonesia’s Deposit Insurance Corporation (LPS).

Suahasil brings extensive experience in fiscal policy to the position. He headed the Finance Ministry’s Fiscal Policy Agency before President Joko Widodo appointed him deputy finance minister in October 2019. Prabowo reappointed him to the same post in October 2024.

An economics professor at the University of Indonesia, Suahasil has taught at the institution since 1999. He received his professorship in 2009, according to the Finance Ministry.

He now assumes responsibility for Indonesia’s state budget, revenue policy and public financing.

His appointment also places him at the center of the government’s effort to maintain fiscal stability. Meanwhile, he is also responsible for financing Prabowo’s priority programs.

The Palace had not announced whether another official would fill Suahasil’s former position as deputy finance minister.
