JAKARTA, thekabarnews.com—Indonesia and Thailand launched a five-year strategic partnership roadmap on Monday, August 3. President Prabowo Subianto and Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul moved to strengthen cooperation between two of Southeast Asia’s major economies.
Prabowo received Anutin at Merdeka Palace in Jakarta for the Thai leader’s first official visit to Indonesia. The visit also marked the first official trip by a Thai prime minister to Indonesia in 15 years.
The two leaders began their talks with a private tête-à-tête before co-chairing the second Indonesia–Thailand Leaders’ Consultation.
They discussed ways to deliver tangible benefits for both countries through stronger trade, investment, food security, education and cooperation in other strategic sectors.
The meeting came as ASEAN members faced shifting supply chains, geopolitical uncertainty and other global economic pressures.
Prabowo and Anutin witnessed the signing of the Indonesia–Thailand Strategic Partnership Roadmap 2026–2030. This roadmap will guide bilateral cooperation over the next five years.
The roadmap follows the two countries’ decision to elevate diplomatic relations to a strategic partnership. This decision took place during Prabowo’s official visit to Bangkok on May 19, 2025.
That meeting produced the first Leaders’ Consultation and coincided with the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations.
The 2025 Indonesia–Thailand joint statement identified political and security cooperation, trade and investment, agriculture, food security, tourism, education and people-to-people links as priority areas.
The leaders also witnessed the signing of a memorandum of understanding between Indonesia’s Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education and Thailand’s Ministry of Education.
The agreement provides a framework for closer educational cooperation between the two ASEAN countries.
The partnership remains focused on economic cooperation. Thailand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs says bilateral trade was about US$18 billion in 2024.
Both governments have tried to bump that figure up through closer business links and a Joint Trade Committee.
The Indonesian Embassy in Bangkok said that more than 700 Thai business representatives attended an Indonesia Investment and Trade Forum in Bangkok in July 2026. This reflects increased private-sector interest in the bilateral market.
Indonesia and Thailand are also founding members of ASEAN. Therefore, their cooperation is more relevant to regional food security, economic integration and supply-chain resilience.
After the talks, Prabowo and Anutin released a joint press statement, reaffirming their commitment to implement the strategic partnership.
Later, Prabowo hosted a state dinner at the State Palace to conclude the official program and to underscore the long-standing friendship between the two countries.
The roadmap provides both governments with a concrete timetable to transform diplomatic commitments into concrete programs by 2030.
