NGADA, thekabarnews.com—The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) is accelerating the construction of temporary homes for residents affected by the magnitude-7.7 Flores earthquake, with hundreds of units still under development across Ngada regency.
BNPB head Lt. Gen. Suharyanto inspected five temporary housing units in Sobo village, West Golewa district, on Wednesday, Sept. 30. The visit aimed to assess construction progress and ensure that the shelters matched local conditions and residents’ needs.
BNPB is building the homes in stages. Families may occupy completed units immediately, while contractors continue work at other locations based on verified beneficiary data, site access and geographical conditions.
“Families whose homes were destroyed will receive temporary housing while waiting for permanent homes,” Suharyanto said in an earlier explanation of the government’s assistance scheme.
As of Sept. 28, six self-managed temporary homes had been completed in Ngada, according to BNPB. Four were located in the Aimere district, while Riung and Wolomeze each had one completed unit.
BNPB had also completed five in-situ temporary homes, bringing the confirmed total to 11 units. Another 272 units remained under construction.
The agency said location planning must account for Ngada’s terrain and the dispersed settlements of affected families. BNPB is coordinating with the Ngada administration, builders and residents to verify recipients and determine suitable sites before construction begins.
Families whose homes sustained severe damage may choose between a temporary house and the Dana Tunggu Hunian [housing-waiting allowance]. The allowance helps affected households secure temporary accommodation while the government prepares permanent reconstruction.
The temporary housing program responds to the earthquake that struck Flores on Aug. 15, 2026. The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) placed the epicenter at sea, about 30 kilometers northeast of Mbay in Nagekeo regency, at a depth of 15 kilometers.
The earthquake affected several districts across Flores and forced thousands of residents to leave damaged homes. Ngada has since entered a transition-to-recovery period scheduled to run until Dec. 16, according to the East Nusa Tenggara provincial administration.
BNPB said it would continue updating beneficiary records with local authorities to prevent unsuitable placements or overlapping assistance. The five units inspected in Sobo form part of that broader effort to move survivors into safer accommodation before permanent homes become available.
