Thekabarnews.com—The much-anticipated historical action picture Blades of the Guardians is ready to adapt one of China’s most beloved manhua series into a big-screen epic. It mixes sweeping martial arts, political intrigue, and heartfelt narrative in the upheaval of the chaotic Sui Dynasty.
From famed martial arts director Yuen Woo-Ping, the film employs real battle choreography and massive production to portray one of the most tumultuous eras in ancient Chinese history.
Dao Ma, a tough bodyguard from China’s western desert, is given a dangerous job: escort a mystery man named Zhishilang to the imperial capital of Chang’an.
The ordinary escort mission turns into a deadly race. Such a scenario happens when other competing forces are after the duo for their own reasons.
Along the trip, Dao Ma must face continuous attacks while defending his partner through perilous landscapes and political turmoil.
As the story progresses, viewers get to know Dao Ma’s history. They also see the emotional connection of raising an orphan, Xiaoqi, as his own.
There are brutal sword fights and themes of loyalty, sacrifice, forgiveness, and personal responsibility.
Blades of the Guardians boasts a star-studded cast that is a who’s who of generations of Chinese cinema.
Confirmed cast members are:
- Jet Li as Chang Guiren
- Jin Zhang as Double-head Snake
- Xing Yu as One-eye
- Qiunan Lin as Lai
- Yi Zhang as Pei Zhiju
- Yosh Yu (Shu) as Shu
- Tony Ka Fai Leung as Mo
While producers have revealed some of the main characters, they have not provided detailed information about all the roles.
Renowned action filmmaker Yuen Woo-Ping, who choreographed martial arts classics and Hollywood blockbusters, is directing the project.
Chao-Bin Su, Xianzhe Xu, and Larry Yang adapted the screenplay. It is based on the gritty storytelling and beautiful artwork by bestselling Chinese manhua (comics) artist Biao Ren.
The film was a co-production of major studios Alibaba Pictures Group, Beijing Dengfeng International Culture Communications Company, and Woo Ping Pictures.
According to sources, the production cost was almost 700 million yuan. This made it one of the most expensive Chinese historical action films recently.
The filming took about 185 days. Much of the movie was shot in the harsh environment of the Taklamakan Desert to create an accurate historical feel.
The filmmakers relied extensively on conventional filmmaking techniques instead of computer-generated graphics.
To create the battle scenes as more realistic and difficult, they minimized artificial visual effects. In addition, they cut down on suspension wires and limited stunt doubles whenever possible.
This technique is in line with Yuen Woo-Ping’s long-standing view. He believes that martial arts choreography should focus on authentic and physical performances.
With beloved source material, international martial arts talent and a big production budget, Blades of the Guardians is one of the most anticipated Asian action films of 2026.
Fans of historical epics, martial arts movies, and Chinese graphic novels are keenly awaiting how the live-action adaptation will match the passion and emotional weight of the original Biao Ren series.
The film hopes to provide an action picture experience for long-time martial arts fans and new viewers throughout the world. It offers an epic historical backdrop, big action scenes and emphasis on practical stunt work.
