JAKARTA, The Kabar News—Indonesia’s Navy has mobilized personnel and placed additional forces on standby under a security plan covering Jakarta, drawing public attention amid a separate investigation into alleged illegal wiretapping of President Prabowo Subianto.
Authorities have not established any connection between the military deployment and the wiretapping case. Officials have described the movement as part of routine military readiness, national security duties and preparations for scheduled exercises.
The Navy’s operational plan involves 20,980 personnel, but the figure does not mean that all of them have entered Jakarta or deployed on the capital’s streets.
Around 2,100 personnel from Jakarta-based units joined the first phase on Nov. 2, while the Navy assigned another 5,740 personnel from outside the capital to subsequent phases. The Navy has kept approximately 13,140 others on standby at their respective bases, according to ANTARA.

The arrangement reportedly places participating personnel under the operational control of the Jakarta Military Command (Kodam Jaya).
“Troop deployments are a routine measure because the TNI must remain ready to protect the entire nation and safeguard the integrity of the Republic of Indonesia,” TNI Information Center chief Maj. Gen. Muhammad Nas said.
He added that the military would conduct its duties under applicable laws.
Navy Information Service chief Rear Adm. Tunggul confirmed that the service had mobilized personnel.
“We confirm the deployment of Navy personnel. The Navy deployed them to carry out state duties and maintain Indonesia’s security and stability,” Tunggul said in a written statement.

However, the Navy has not publicly identified a specific security threat requiring the mobilization. It said some personnel movements were also connected to preparations for amphibious and coastal exercises in Tangerang and Pandeglang, Banten. These included a special landing operation exercise and the Tembus Gelombang drill.
The deployment gained wider attention after authorities named former National Police chief Listyo Sigit Prabowo and two other senior officers as suspects in an alleged illegal interception case. Investigators allege that the case involved unauthorized access to communications and the deletion of electronic records between 2025 and 2026.
President Prabowo dismissed Listyo as presidential chief of staff on Nov. 4. The State Secretariat said the government appointed Ariyo Windutomo as acting chief of staff.

Nevertheless, officials have not said that the Navy mobilization responds to that investigation. The absence of a confirmed link between the two developments.
Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung said the provincial administration supported legitimate measures to protect the capital while recognizing that defense and security policy falls under the central government’s authority.
“Matters related to security and defense are indeed the responsibility of the central government,” Pramono said. He declined to speculate about recent political developments.
The distinction between personnel deployed in Jakarta and forces remaining on standby is essential to understanding the operation’s scale. Clear public information about its mandate, duration and operational boundaries would help prevent speculation while allowing the government to maintain security in the capital.
