South African international midfielder Jayden Adams, 25, has died just weeks after playing for Bafana Bafana in the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Officials from the players’ union and the government confirmed his death but did not provide a cause. For the first time ever, Adams led South Africa to the knockout stage of the tournament.
Thekabarnews.com—South African football has lost international midfielder Jayden Adams. The 25-year-old died shortly after representing his country at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The South African government confirmed the news on Saturday, July 11.
President Cyril Ramaphosa conveyed his condolences to Adams’ family, teammates, and supporters. He described Adams as one of the country’s top young sportsmen. Adams, the statement said, is a midfielder for Bafana Bafana and Mamelodi Sundowns.
No cause of death had been announced at the time of publication. Authorities and football organizations did not provide details, and it is important to avoid unverified speculation.
Adams played in all three of South Africa’s Group A matches. He debuted against Mexico and Czechia. Later, he came off the bench in a 1-0 win over South Korea.
That victory sent Bafana Bafana through to the World Cup knockout phase for the first time. South Africa finished second in Group A. After that, they secured second place in Group A, but they were eliminated by Canada in the Round of 32.
The team responded to an opening loss to Mexico with a draw against Czechia. In addition, they won against South Korea before FIFA said they were eliminated.
Reports said Adams’ grandmother died a few days before South Africa faced Czechia. The coach substituted Adams at halftime in that match. Still, he stayed with the national squad as it completed its historic campaign.
The South African Football Players’ Union said the country had lost a gifted footballer. They also mourned the loss of a young man whose career still had immense promise.
“South African football has lost a gifted player, a proud servant of the game and a young life that still had so much to offer,” the statement said.
Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie also extended his condolences to Adams’ family, friends, and the millions of fans who had followed his rise.
Stellenbosch FC developed Adams before he joined Pretoria-based Mamelodi Sundowns in January 2025. He later helped the club win the 2025-26 CAF Champions League.
He made 13 senior international appearances and scored twice. Notably, both goals came in qualification for the 2026 World Cup, according to Reuters.
FIFA named Adams among the four midfielders in South Africa’s 26-man World Cup squad. This highlighted the important position he had carved out in Hugo Broos’ team.
South African football is mourning a player whose international career had reached the biggest stage just weeks before his death.
