Thekabarnews.com—Early reactions are beginning to come in for Marvel Studios’ latest project. The Punisher: One Last Kill sees Jon Bernthal back as Frank Castle in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). These reactions are pretty strong so far.
Many critics and entertainment media outlets previewed the Disney+ special presentation. They praised its brutal tone, dark atmosphere, and psychological depth. In fact, many are calling it one of Marvel’s most mature and emotionally intense projects to date.
Some early reviews have even gone so far as to call The Punisher: One Last Kill the most brutal and emotionally impactful Marvel project ever released on Disney+.
“This is the most mature project Marvel Studios has ever done. Frank is at his lowest, and Jon Bernthal is wonderful and has some haunting scenes,” ScreenRant’s Rob Keyes said.
Collider’s Maggie Lovitt liked the special for its deep dive into Frank Castle’s mental state. She also appreciated how the story carefully examines his trauma, grief, and emotional scars.
Critics also pointed to the story’s move beyond violence and its focus on the psychological toll on the antihero.
According to MovieWeb’s Joseph Deckelmeier, the experience makes viewers feel “trapped inside of Frank Castle’s mind.”
“War, trauma, anger, and violence are closing in from every side,” he said.
The Mary Sue’s Rachel Leishman called the special a compelling character study of Frank and his unresolved grief.
“It’s very bloody and brutal, but at the same time, it creates an intriguing foundation for Frank’s next chapter,” she said.
Jon Bernthal executive produces and stars in the project, which he co-writes with director Reinaldo Marcus Green.
Many critics credit Bernthal’s hands-on approach with helping make Frank Castle feel more personal, raw, and emotionally real.
Some reviewers said Marvel finally gave Punisher the creative freedom to exist without any major compromises.
Frank Castle’s return in The Punisher: One Last Kill also ties in with his upcoming appearance in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. This project is set to drop in July.
The film is Bernthal’s first major MCU appearance on the big screen as the Punisher. Previously, he played the character primarily in Marvel’s Netflix and Disney+ television projects over the years.
While Marvel has yet to confirm Frank Castle’s long-term future past 2026, the hype around the special has led many fans to believe the studio is setting up a bigger role for the character.
Some fans even speculate that the Punisher may return once again in Daredevil: Born Again Season 3, currently in production.
The Punisher: One Last Kill will hit Disney+ on May 12. Anticipation is growing as fans wait to see Marvel’s darkest antihero back in the spotlight.
