Thekabarnews.com—The Mempawah administration stated and underlined it had a duty to oversee mining activity in Bukit Peniraman. However, the authority to regulate the sector belonged to the provincial government.
The local government would not be silent over the extraction of Mineral Non-Metal and Rock (MBLB), or commonly known as Galian C, in Peniraman Village, Sungai Pinyuh District, Mempawah Regency, West Kalimantan.
Juli expressed his position when he visited the site along with the authorities of the West Kalimantan provincial administration on 21 April 2026.
Officials of the Manpower, Investment, and Integrated One-Stop Service (PMPTSP) Office attended the inspection. Officials from the Industry, Trade, Energy, and Mineral Resources Office (ESDM) and the Environmental Agency also attended.
“The provincial government has the capacity to issue mining permits and legislation, but the Mempawah administration has a moral and strategic obligation to handle the impact of such activities in its area,” Juli told CNN.
Officials should preserve Bukit Peniraman properly, as it serves as a vital link between economic progress and environmental protection.
“The provincial government handles licensing, but we cannot remain passive. We are responsible for ensuring proper governance, maintaining public safety, and protecting the environment,” Juli added.
The local government is taking action to limit unregulated mining that can damage neighboring communities and ecosystems. It does so through the enactment of more rigorous legislation and engaging with local stakeholders. As a result, these efforts ensure that operations do not compromise environmental integrity or public health.
The management of this zone requires balancing commercial interests with the protection of the environment and the safety of the residents.
The field tour aimed to strengthen coordination between provincial and district administrations. Its goal was to establish clear and enforceable legislation for mining in the area.
“We want to ensure that everything is done according to the laws that are in place and in a way that is sustainable in the long term,” officials added.
They also called for stricter enforcement and supervision of safety laws in the mines. In addition, they stressed the significance of directing the extraction of natural resources to guarantee worker safety and environmental protection. Such legislation aims to foster sustainable regional development.
The mining industry has boosted the economy but also raised concerns about environmental deterioration and community welfare. Hence, we need strong governance and effective intergovernmental cooperation to reduce these risks.
The proactive approach of the Mempawah administration is part of a larger effort to balance economic development with environmental conservation. The province collaborates with the municipal government to ensure responsible mining that does not compromise long-term sustainability.
As discussions continue, stakeholders aim to establish stronger and more effective controls over mining operations. The goal is to ensure that these activities contribute to the growth of the local economy. Furthermore, they aim to protect the natural resources of the region for future generations.
Some of these ways include more stringent controls and promotion of sustainable practices. These should strike a balance between economic development and environmental conservation.
