Although promotional descriptions have called it dialogue-free, Motor City is not technically a silent film. The production reportedly contains about five spoken lines across its entire 103-minute running time.

“This is not a silent film. There are about five lines of dialogue,” Foster said during the film’s festival campaign.

Ponciroli explained that the familiar revenge plot gave filmmakers enough room to experiment with sparse storytelling.

“We don’t have to force-feed anything,” the director told TheWrap.

The approach puts considerable emphasis on Ritchson’s physical acting. It also distinguishes the film from dialogue-heavy Hollywood thrillers. Also, its calculated protagonist and elaborate action sequences have prompted comparisons with the John Wick franchise.

Alongside Ritchson, Foster and Woodley, the cast includes Pablo Schreiber, Ben McKenzie, Lionel Boyce, Amar Chadha-Patel and Rafael Cebrián. The official distributor listing credits Ponciroli as director and St. John as screenwriter.

The film premiered in the Venezia Spotlight section of the 82nd Venice International Film Festival in August 2025. Afterward, it screened at the Toronto International Film Festival. The Venice Biennale confirms its 103-minute running time and principal cast.

Music and sound carry much of the narrative weight normally handled by dialogue. Steve Jablonsky composed the film’s music. Meanwhile, Detroit-born musician and White Stripes co-founder Jack White served as music director and helped curate its song-driven soundtrack.

Rock, disco and soul recordings accompany engine noise, gunfire and physical combat, reinforcing the film’s stylized depiction of 1970s Detroit.
