Thekabarnews.com—PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI), the state railway operator, issued an official statement apologizing for a fatal collision between the long-distance Argo Bromo Anggrek and a commuter train near East Bekasi Station on April 27.
At least four people died and dozens suffered injuries. This prompted a massive emergency response at the site, according to KAI. In addition, authorities say they have evacuated at least 38 victims. Medical teams continue to tend to the injured.
KAI Corporate Communication Vice President Anne Purba also said his party expressed condolences. Furthermore, he emphasized that passenger safety was the priority.
“We apologize for this incident. Our first priority is to provide immediate and appropriate assistance to all passengers and crew,” Anne said in an official statement.
Immediately after the crash, KAI deployed all of its resources to support evacuation efforts and to cooperate with emergency responders. This included medical personnel and local authorities. Furthermore, KAI is working closely with the relevant agencies to secure the area and aid the victims.
Early reports said a commuter line train had blocked the station since around 7:30 p.m. local time. A stalled electric vehicle at a nearby railroad crossing allegedly blocked the tracks and caused the disruption.
The train was behind the commuter train and was hit by it in the gap between 8:40 p.m. and 8:53 p.m. The impact was severe. In fact, the locomotive ripped into the back end of the commuter train.
The collision heavily damaged the rear carriage of the commuter train, which officials identified as a women-only carriage. Meanwhile, rescuers are still evacuating passengers and giving medical aid at the scene.
“The incident has raised serious concerns among passengers and their families,” KAI stated, as quoted by WartaEkonomi.
It would fully cooperate with authorities in investigating the cause of the accident and preventing similar incidents in the future. Stricter safety standards and oversight of infrastructure are key to making railroad operations safer.
The incident also points up the need for better coordination between transportation systems and road crossings. In addition, the implementation of advanced warning systems would enhance safety at these critical junctions.
Investigators remain focused on the case, while authorities prepare to explain the timeline and cause of the incident.
The collision of two trains in Bekasi, one of the most serious railway accidents in recent times, demonstrates the urgency of safety measures in the country’s transportation system.
KAI has asked for calm while authorities deal with the incident and ensure victims receive the right care and support.
