TOKYO, Thekabarnews.com—Japan is bracing itself for an increase in passport applications after a steep decline in passport fees. The reduction aims to increase the number of citizens with travel documents and international travel.
Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has urged residents to apply for passports well ahead of the busy summer holiday season. Moreover, they warn that processing times could balloon as demand surges after the upcoming fee reduction.
The price for a regular 10-year Japanese passport will be cut nearly 43 percent to 9,300 yen (about $58) from 16,300 yen. This change will begin on July 1, 2026.
The reduced fees are expected to spark a wave of new applications and renewals. Especially citizens who had held off applying, knowing the price was about to fall, are likely to apply.
The Foreign Ministry said passport applications were down about 10 percent through April 2026 from past trends. Officials believe many citizens intentionally held off on applying, anticipating the lower fees to take effect.
Officials are now bracing for a huge jump in demand starting in July.
To help cope with the expected surge, Japan’s National Printing Bureau will increase output and work on weekends. However, officials say even with those extra steps, passport processing could still take up to a month during busy application periods.
The policy is part of a broader government push to raise Japan’s passport ownership rate. This rate is still relatively low compared to other advanced economies.
Japan boasts one of the world’s most powerful passports for visa-free travel, but, surprisingly, few Japanese actually have valid passports.
Several factors, including Japan’s aging population and a robust domestic tourism industry, drive the trend. Additionally, the continued impact of travel restrictions introduced during the COVID-19 pandemic plays a role.
They hope that reducing fees will eliminate one obstacle to international travel for officials. Furthermore, it could motivate more citizens to explore overseas destinations.
The move also supports Japan’s efforts to promote international exchange, cultural engagement, business travel, and tourism activities. This announcement comes as global mobility continues to recover from disruptions during the pandemic era.
Representatives of the travel industry have welcomed the measure. These representatives argue that cheaper passports could help to boost outbound tourism and create further opportunities for airlines, travel agents, and the hospitality industry.
More travel outside the country can help create global business links and educational exchanges. Consequently, such actions can lead to broader economic and social benefits.
The fee reduction comes at a time when many countries are trying to rebuild tourism activity and international connectivity. Inbound tourism in Japan has rebounded sharply with foreign visitors returning in record numbers recently.
Now the policymakers are trying to get more Japanese to travel overseas. This will be an important test of whether lower administrative costs can make a big difference in rates of passport ownership and international travel behavior in the coming months.
The program, if successful, could act as a model for other countries. Other nations may wish to enhance the mobility of their people globally.
Now, Japanese officials are encouraging residents to apply well in advance of the deadline. With application volumes expected to rise sharply after July 1, travelers planning overseas vacations may face longer processing times if they delay submitting their passport requests.
