Thekabarnews.com—The U.S. Department of State announced Tuesday it is preparing a limited release of commemorative U.S. passports. These will celebrate America’s 250th anniversary with an image of President Donald Trump.
If officials release it as planned, President Donald Trump will become the first living U.S. president to appear inside an official American passport, marking a historic first in the country’s travel document design. The Washington, D.C., passport office will issue about 25,000 to 30,000 of the special passports just before July 4.
The commemorative passports are part of a broader America250 celebration. This event marks 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence. State Department spokesman Tommy Pigott said this, as quoted by APNews.
“With the United States celebrating the 250th anniversary of America in July, the State Department will issue a limited number of specially designed U.S. passports to commemorate the historic occasion,” Pigott said.
The design includes Trump’s portrait on an inside page, across from an illustration of the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776. Additionally, his signature rendered in gold will also be part of the commemorative layout.
“The passports will have unique artwork on them, but will still have the same high-level security features that standard U.S. passports have,” he added.
The cover will have bold gold lettering and patriotic symbols. These include a gold American flag and a “250” emblem surrounded by stars.
During the rollout period, officials said applicants using the Washington Passport Agency may receive the commemorative version. However, standard passport options will still be available through online applications and other passport offices.
The release is the latest effort to link Trump’s image to significant federal observances and public symbols. The event occurs during his second term.
There also were reports of discussions to put Trump’s name on future U.S. currency. In addition, there have been talks of using his image on a gold commemorative coin in celebration of the nation’s founding anniversary.
The design reflects Trump’s leadership during the semiquincentennial celebration. It also fits in with broader efforts under the White House’s “Freedom 250” initiative.
Some critics wonder whether putting a sitting president so prominently on official government documents risks politicizing national symbols.
Current U.S. passports have included American landmarks and past presidents such as George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, and Theodore Roosevelt through the Mount Rushmore design. However, they have never featured a living president.
The commemorative passports are expected to be among the most closely watched symbolic releases associated with America250. They show both celebration and political debate.
As the US approaches its 250th Independence Day, the passport design illustrates how national milestones can also be sewn into larger conversations about leadership, legacy, and public identity.
