Thekabarnews.com—The rise in the number of Indonesian students studying in China is challenging the long-standing allure of universities in the United States. This trend is also challenging other Western countries.
About 20,000 Indonesians were studying at Chinese educational institutions as of January 2026, according to data attributed to the Indonesian Embassy in Beijing. The figure rose by approximately 54% from around 13,000 students in 2016.
China now hosts more than twice as many Indonesian students as the United States. The Institute of International Education’s 2025 Open Doors report recorded 8,104 Indonesian students at US institutions during the 2024–2025 academic year. This was down from 8,348 a year earlier.
The Chinese and US figures cover different reporting periods and may use different counting methods. They therefore indicate the scale of the trend but do not provide a direct, like-for-like comparison.
Second Deputy Higher Education, Science and Technology Minister Stella Christie said students increasingly view leading Chinese universities as alternatives to elite Western institutions.
Christie recalled asking high school students in Aceh where they wanted to continue their education. Instead of naming Harvard or another US Ivy League university, she said, “A lot of them said Tsinghua.”
Tsinghua University, one of China’s most competitive institutions, has also allocated 50 places annually for Indonesian high school graduates, according to Christie.
The Higher Education, Science and Technology Ministry previously confirmed that leading Chinese universities were providing special opportunities for Indonesian students.
“Talent development is the most important investment for the nation’s future,” Christie said in a ministry statement on Indonesia-China higher education cooperation.
Scholarships also support the growth. The Chinese Embassy in Jakarta offered 20 fully funded places for Indonesian undergraduate, master’s and doctoral applicants under its 2026–2027 higher education scholarship program.
The scheme covers fields including marine studies, health, tourism and education, although recipients must pay their international travel expenses.
The student shift comes as Jakarta and Beijing expand cooperation in trade, investment, technology and industrial development.
Statistics Indonesia (BPS) data showed that bilateral trade reached US$154.58 billion in 2025, an increase of 13.2% from the previous year. Indonesia exported US$67.04 billion in goods to China and imported US$87.54 billion.
China remained Indonesia’s largest trading partner, accounting for 23.7% of Indonesian exports and 36.2% of its imports.
Strong Chinese involvement in nickel processing, electric-vehicle batteries, manufacturing and digital technology has also increased demand for Indonesian graduates. This trend has increased demand for graduates with relevant technical and language skills.
The trend does not mean Indonesian students have abandoned American universities.
China’s scholarships, geographical proximity, expanding academic partnerships and growing role in Indonesia’s economy have given students a broader range of competitive education and career opportunities.
