KUBU RAYA, thekabarnews.com—The Kubu Raya regency administration plans to redevelop Hakka Street in the Sungai Raya district by building a jogging track and improving the road. They plan to install streetlights while tackling illegal waste dumping along the corridor.
Regent Sujiwo announced the plan during an inspection on Tuesday, Oct. 6. The administration will introduce scheduled disposal hours and provide temporary waste collection facilities (TPS). These steps aim to prevent rubbish from accumulating beside the road.
Several locations along Hakka Street have reportedly become informal dumping points despite banners warning residents not to leave waste there. The piles have affected the area’s appearance. Moreover, they could undermine the government’s plan to turn the corridor into a cleaner public space.
“In this area along Hakka Street, we will build a public jogging track. The road must be smooth, and we will install street lighting,” Sujiwo said during the inspection.
The regent did not disclose the project’s budget, construction schedule or detailed design. The precise site for the planned temporary waste facility also remains subject to land availability.
The waste-management measures will extend to other locations, including the Parit Ngabeh area. Sujiwo said the administration was seeking permission to use a plot of land as a temporary collection point. This facility will serve nearby residents.
“We are trying to borrow land for a community TPS,” he said. “I ask residents to dispose of their waste between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. After that, officers will collect it.”
The administration also plans to provide waste containers at designated sites. Officials expect the arrangement to make collection more predictable and discourage residents from creating new roadside dumping points.
“Residents must follow the disposal schedule set by the local government,” Sujiwo said.
The initiative responds to a wider waste-service challenge in Kubu Raya. An Kominfo Kubu Raya, citing data from the regency’s public works and housing agency, recorded 161,716.9 tonnes of waste generated in 2024. The administration reported that its services could handle 26,280 tonnes during the same year.
Kubu Raya’s public works agency acknowledged in a 2025 waste-management program that illegal dumping remained common. They also stated that public awareness of responsible waste disposal required improvement.
The Hakka Street plan therefore combines physical improvements with changes in residents’ disposal habits. Containers and collection schedules may reduce illegal dumping. However, their effectiveness will depend on consistent transportation services, clear public information and community compliance.
If the redevelopment goes ahead as planned, it could offer Sungai Raya residents a safer recreational corridor and eliminate a constant source of pollution by the roadside.
