President Prabowo Subianto says Indonesia’s bullion ecosystem now manages about 153 tonnes of gold worth an estimated US$20 billion. The services, operated by Pegadaian and Bank Syariah Indonesia, aim to mobilize domestic gold and deepen financial markets. Official dates show the milestone took about 17 months, not just one year.
JAKARTA, thekabarnews.com—Indonesia’s bullion ecosystem manages approximately 153 tonnes of gold valued by the government at nearly US$20 billion. President Prabowo Subianto announced this during a plenary cabinet meeting at the State Palace on Monday, July 20.
Prabowo described the development as an important achievement in Indonesia’s efforts to strengthen its financial system. Also, it helps retain more value from the country’s mineral resources.
“Another important achievement is the establishment of the first gold bank in the history of the Republic of Indonesia. The gold bank now manages around 153 tonnes of gold, valued at about US$20 billion,” Prabowo said.
Indonesia’s “bullion bank” is not a single institution. It refers to regulated bullion services operated by state-owned pawnbroker PT Pegadaian and Islamic lender PT Bank Syariah Indonesia (BSI).
The Financial Services Authority (OJK) officially launched the two institutions’ bullion services on February 26, 2025. The 153-tonne milestone came nearly 17 months after the official launch—not within exactly one year, as Prabowo stated.
Under OJK Regulation No. 17/2024, licensed financial institutions may offer gold deposits, financing, trading and custody services.
The system allows households and businesses to place physical gold within the formal financial sector. In this way, institutions can use it to support financing throughout the domestic gold supply chain.
OJK said Indonesia produced approximately 110 to 160 tonnes of gold annually in 2023. Consequently, it was the world’s eighth-largest producer that year. The regulator expects bullion services to deepen domestic financial markets, support gold processing and reduce reliance on imports.
Pegadaian’s bullion-services customer base increased from 3.2 million in February 2025 to 5.6 million in February 2026, according to government data reported by ANTARA. Gold held in Pegadaian savings accounts rose from 10.5 tonnes to 19.25 tonnes over the same period.
BSI managed approximately 22.5 tonnes through its gold-installment, pawning and savings products by February 2026. Its gold-savings customers increased from 531,329 in December 2025 to 766,742 two months later, according to ANTARA.
President Prabowo said the bullion ecosystem had developed into an economic force attracting international attention. Moreover, he predicted its value would continue rising.
“Within one year, the bank we established managed gold worth US$20 billion. I believe this will continue to increase in the coming years,” the president said.
OJK has since introduced a 2026–2031 roadmap focused on expanding Indonesia’s bullion ecosystem. The roadmap also supports downstream gold industries and strengthens risk management.
