Thekabarnews.com—The Indonesian tourism sector still has much momentum to recover. This progress is seen with the arrival of more than 1.16 million international tourists in February 2026. Arrivals increased 13.37 percent year-on-year.
Data from Statistics Indonesia (BPS) also supports the increase in international arrivals. This data recorded an increase in mobility and international interest in Indonesia’s tourism products in the meantime.
“The number of foreign tourists visiting Indonesia in January-February 2026 reached 2.35 million, up 7.77 percent compared to January-February 2025,” said BPS Deputy for Distribution and Services Statistics, Ateng Hartono. It’s the best for the first two months of any year since 2021.
“This increase shows the growth of the tourism sector in Indonesia and its recovery,” he said.
The highest arrivals were from Malaysia, which was 199,220, or 17.18 percent of total arrivals. Arrivals from Malaysia slid 7.17 percent over the same period last year but remained in the top spot. Next was China with 150,820 visitors, or 13.01 percent, and Singapore with 109,330 arrivals, or 9.43 percent.
The major markets grew the fastest, with arrivals up 68.89 percent year-on-year: China. Analysts attributed the sharp rise to the long holiday break for the Lunar New Year. This holiday spurred demand for outbound travel.
But air travel remained the preferred mode of entry for international tourists. It accounted for 78.10 percent of all arrivals or some 782,600 journeys through the main airports. Of the arrivals, 18.42 percent were by water transit and 3.48 percent by land border crossings.
The steady rise is because of Indonesia’s ongoing efforts to improve connectivity, boost tourism infrastructure, and promote key attractions. The increase also reflects broader regional trends of recovering travel demand after earlier setbacks around the world.
The growth will necessitate maintaining the quality of infrastructure and services. More people will come with a better travel experience, better international routes, and effective destination management.
The government has set ambitious targets to become the number one tourism destination in Southeast Asia by 2026. The sector has made a promising start to the year and is anticipated to achieve those targets.
With the increasing demand for travel globally, Indonesia’s tourism industry will be one of the key drivers for economic growth. It will also support job creation and the country’s profile on the world stage.
