Thekabarnews.com—Equatorial Guinea’s entire cabinet resigned on Monday, having failed to achieve most of its policy goals. This resignation paves the way for a new administration expected to take office in the coming days.
Vice President Teodoro Nguema Obiang Mangue said Prime Minister Manuel Osa Nsue Nsuga handed in the resignation of all cabinet ministers. This followed a review of government performance, which showed ministries had missed their targets by a wide margin.
The vice president said on the social media platform X that the government had only achieved 10 percent of its planned objectives. However, he did not disclose the authorities’ method of measuring performance. He also did not explain the criteria used for assessment.
“The level of implementation achieved is obviously insufficient compared to the expectations and commitments made,” Obiang said in the statement.
The cabinet reshuffle is a major political event in the Central African nation. For over four decades, President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo has ruled the country.
The vice president, who announced the government’s resignation, is the son of the president. This makes Equatorial Guinea one of the few countries where the father and son simultaneously hold the nation’s two highest executive offices.
The ruling Democratic Party of Equatorial Guinea (PDGE) said President Obiang was increasingly unhappy with the government’s performance.
Party officials cited a number of long-standing problems, including corruption, delays to infrastructure and development projects, and the government’s limited success in diversifying the oil-dependent economy.
Equatorial Guinea is one of Africa’s top oil producers, but the country has failed to diversify from hydrocarbon revenues.
Successive governments have promised to extend economic activity into sectors such as agriculture, tourism, fisheries, manufacturing, and services. However, implementation has been slow.
Government officials are yet to release the names of ministers who will join the incoming cabinet. The new administration is expected to take office in the coming days. The move is in an attempt to speed up reforms and improve government performance, authorities say.
The cabinet’s resignation was a sign of mounting pressure on public institutions to deliver better economic results. There is also pressure on the government to improve governance and administrative efficiency. The restructuring may also be a sign of President Obiang’s desire to improve accountability in the executive branch.
The leadership change comes when Equatorial Guinea is facing wider economic challenges, including falling oil production, a need to diversify its economy, and rising public expectations for better governance.
The public will closely watch how the new cabinet forms. They want to see whether the administration will make any major policy shifts to address corruption, improve project implementation, and accelerate economic diversification.
The sweeping resignation is one of the most significant government overhauls in recent years. It underlines the leadership’s stated commitment to improving administrative performance and achieving national development objectives.
