JAKARTA, thekabarnews.com—The House of Representatives’ (DPR) Commission XI has approved Destry Damayanti as the next Bank Indonesia (BI) governor for the 2026–2031 term. However, her selection still requires confirmation at a DPR plenary meeting.
The commission reached the decision by consensus after conducting two days of fit-and-proper tests at the parliamentary complex in Jakarta. These tests took place on Wednesday and Thursday, August 26–27, 2026.
“Through an internal decision and deliberation to reach consensus, we have selected Mrs. Destry Damayanti as Bank Indonesia (BI) governor for the 2026–2031 term,” Mukhamad Misbakhun, chairman of House Commission XI, told reporters on Thursday.
Commission XI also approved Aida S. Budiman as senior deputy governor and Solikin M. Juhro as deputy governor for the same five-year term.
“Mrs. Aida Budiman was selected as Bank Indonesia (BI) senior deputy governor for the 2026–2031 period, while Solikin M. Juhro was selected as deputy governor for the 2026–2031 period,” Misbakhun said.
The selection process covered four candidates rather than three. The president nominated Destry as the only candidate for governor and Aida as the candidate for senior deputy governor.
Solikin and M. Anwar Bashori competed for the deputy-governor position, with the commission ultimately selecting Solikin.
Misbakhun said Commission XI had completed its assignment. He said they would submit the results to a DPR plenary session scheduled for September 1.
“We selected them through deliberation and consensus, and they will be presented for confirmation at the plenary meeting on September 1, 2026,” he said.
The commission’s decision therefore makes Destry the governor-elect at the commission level. She will not formally assume the governorship solely on the basis of Thursday’s vote.
Bank Indonesia (BI) governors take office following the required state appointment process. They must take an oath before the chief justice of the Supreme Court, as occurred when former governor Perry Warjiyo began his second term in 2023.
President Prabowo Subianto nominated Destry after Perry resigned for health reasons in July. Destry has since served as acting governor, according to the current Bank Indonesia official.
During her fit-and-proper test, lawmakers questioned how she would protect the central bank’s independence while coordinating with the government.
The official DPR report said Destry presented a “Sinergi Merah Putih” framework intended to support economic growth without abandoning BI’s stability mandate. Commission XI also stressed the importance of coordination among economic institutions.
Destry, an economist educated at the University of Indonesia and Cornell University, has served as BI’s senior deputy governor since 2019. She formerly worked at the Deposit Insurance Corporation. She held senior economic roles in the banking sector.
If the plenary confirms the selections, the new leadership will take responsibility for monetary policy. This comes at a time when Bank Indonesia must balance rupiah stability with sustainable economic growth.
