Thekabarnews.com—PT Pertamina (Persero) increased the price of non-subsidized fuel effective April 18, 2024. This included steep hikes for high-quality diesel products such as Dexlite and Pertamina Dex.
Dexlite is currently priced at Rp23,600 per liter in the Greater Jakarta area. Pertamina Dex is now selling for Rp23,900 per liter. The hike—nearly Rp10,000 from the previous prices—has sparked concerns among vehicle owners. This is especially true for those driving diesel-powered sport utility vehicles (SUVs).
The effect is visible in popular ladder-frame SUVs like the Toyota Fortuner and Mitsubishi Pajero Sport. These vehicles need high-quality diesel to maintain engine performance and emission standards.
Toyota has officially specified the Fortuner to hold 80 liters of fuel in its tank. At the current prices, the cost to fill the tank with Dexlite is around Rp1,888,000. Meanwhile, with Pertamina Dex, it’s about Rp1,912,000.
Back then, the Pertamina Dex price was around Rp14,500/liter, so filling up a tank would cost around Rp1,160,000. As a result, Fortuner car owners now need to spend an additional Rp750,000 for each tank of fuel.
The Mitsubishi Pajero Sport has a slightly smaller fuel tank capacity of 68 liters. The cost to fill a full tank of Dexlite at current prices is about Rp1,604,800. Furthermore, Pertamina Dex is about Rp1,625,200.
The Pajero Sport is more fuel efficient than the Fortuner. However, it still costs more than Rp1.5 million to fill the tank, which could make a big dent in your routine operating expenses.
The higher diesel prices could begin to alter consumer behavior, particularly for owners of large, gas-guzzling vehicles. The rise may also have wider consequences for transport costs and logistics, as diesel supports commercial activities.
As fuel prices continue to fluctuate, consumers are likely to be more selective about how they use fuel. They may also focus on the efficiency of their vehicles.
The latest price hikes serve as a reminder to SUV owners. These increases show the ever-increasing financial burden that energy costs are placing on day-to-day mobility.
