Thekabarnews.com—China’s latest artificial intelligence breakthrough suggests the next frontier may be friendship itself, as the technology moves beyond smartphones and computers.
On June 30, Chinese robotics firm UBTech Robotics officially launched its humanoid companion robot UWORLD U1 Series in Shenzhen. The company has released a full-sized robot that can talk, read emotions, and provide social interaction to people who are lonely or live alone.
Unlike traditional service robots, the UWORLD U1 series stands out from traditional service robots, which primarily serve industrial or home environments, by emphasizing emotional involvement. In industrial or home settings, the UWORLD U1 series focuses on emotional involvement.
The robot boasts 88 movable joints and is clad in a smooth silicone skin. It also has an AI system that recognizes over 20 human emotions.
The company says the emotion-recognition system is about 90 percent accurate. The system allows the robot to respond more appropriately during conversations by recognizing and interpreting human emotions.
The humanoid robot, which costs 119,800 yuan (about US$17,650), is designed to talk to people, recognize their emotions and be a friend through AI-powered interactions, UBTech said.
UBTech said the solution tackles a growing societal problem in China. Demographic change is resulting in more people living alone.
Today, the company estimates about 90 million people live alone. There are also 118 million older adults who are so-called empty nesters, whose children are no longer living at home.
Demographic trends have generated interest in technologies that can offer social connection and emotional support. This is especially true for older people who may feel isolated.
During the product presentation, Michael Tam, Chief Brand Officer of UBTech, drew international attention with his bold description of the robot’s job.
“UWorld U1 Series will never betray you, will always be loyal to you, and will love you unconditionally,” said Tam, who introduced the series.
His remarks sparked a social media frenzy, sparking a conversation about the changing relationship between humans and AI.
The technology was a feasible solution for loneliness and to support the older population. But others challenged the ethical and emotional ramifications of using AI companions to fulfill human social needs.
Consumer interest was high from the start. By the end of the launch day, UBTech said, customers had placed more than 13,361 orders for the product. This indicates a high level of interest in humanoid companion technology. The company expects to start delivery of the first units in mid-September 2026.
The speedy response mirrors the wider momentum building in China’s robotics industry. And corporations are still throwing billions of dollars at artificial intelligence, automation, and human-machine interactions.
Progress in the areas of large language models, computer vision, and emotion recognition has boosted the development of robots. Now these robots can have more and more real conversations.
Developers design companion robots to complement human relationships, not to replace them. Good relationships with family, friends, and community continue to be central to mental health. AI companions can offer an additional source of social interaction for isolated people.
But the launch of UWORLD’s U1 Series highlights just how fast AI is outpacing productivity and automation. Now, AI is becoming integrated into everyday social life.
With societies facing aging populations and changing family structures, devices to help alleviate loneliness may become more common.
Although no one knows whether humanoid companions will become part of everyday life, UBTech’s latest innovation shows that emotional AI has already moved beyond a futuristic concept. Instead, this conversation has already begun.
