JAKARTA, thekabarnews.com—MNC Group Executive Chairman Hary Tanoesoedibjo said he had filed a police report against businessman Jusuf Hamka. Hary alleged that statements by Jusuf Hamka had damaged his reputation.
Hary announced the legal action in a recorded statement published by SindoNews on Wednesday, September 30. He said the disputed remarks had appeared in public discussions and on social media, where Jusuf Hamka allegedly accused him of fraud.
“I have filed a police report naming Jusuf Hamka as the reported party,” Hary said.
Hary said he had known Jusuf Hamka for about 30 years and initially had no intention of pursuing a criminal complaint.
He changed course after concluding that the public statements had become personal and had also affected companies within MNC Group.
“At first, I did not plan to file a police report,” Hary said.
He described the statements as defamatory allegations that attacked his character, although investigators have not publicly assessed those claims.
Hary argued that anyone alleging criminal conduct should submit evidence through the legal process. He said this should happen instead of presenting the accusation as an established fact on social media.
MNC Group’s legal counsel had previously warned that the company was considering legal action. They called Jusuf Hamka’s statements inaccurate and unbalanced.
MNC Group made those claims, but no court has established them in the reported defamation case.
Authorities had not publicly disclosed which police unit received the complaint, its registration number or the statutory provisions cited when this article was prepared.
Police had also not issued a publicly accessible statement confirming the report or outlining the next procedural step.
The latest confrontation stems from a long-running civil dispute between CMNP, a toll-road company associated with Jusuf Hamka, and Hary Tanoesoedibjo and PT MNC Asia Holding.
The case concerns a 1999 transaction in which the parties exchanged Bank Unibank negotiable certificates of deposit for CMNP medium-term notes and bonds.
In April 2026, the Central Jakarta District Court partially granted CMNP’s lawsuit in case No. 142/Pdt.G/2025/PN.Jkt.Pst.
According to CMNP’s statements, the court ordered Hary and MNC Asia Holding to pay US$28 million plus annual interest. The court also ordered payment of Rp50 billion in nonmaterial damages.
MNC disputed the decision and announced that it would appeal, arguing that the judgment contained points requiring further examination. Its legal counsel also stressed that the ruling was not yet final at the time of the appeal announcement.
Jusuf Hamka had not issued a publicly accessible response to Hary’s latest police-report announcement when this article was prepared.
Filing a police complaint does not establish criminal responsibility; authorities must first examine the report and supporting evidence before deciding whether the case can proceed.
