JAKARTA, thekabarnews.com—Gerakan Rakyat Indonesia Bersatu Jaya (GRIB Jaya) has denied allegations that its members assaulted a resident who later died during unrest in Pejompongan, Central Jakarta. This incident occurred after a demonstration near the Indonesian Parliament.

The organization issued the denial on Sunday, August 30. They responded after videos and social media posts circulated linking the incident to the death of Bambang Setiyawan, a 59-year-old mirror seller from Bendungan Hilir.

GRIB Jaya secretary general Zulfikar claimed that other demonstrators, rather than members of his organization, carried out the assault.

“You may have seen on TikTok that someone died after being beaten. GRIB did not beat him. Other demonstrators beat him,” Zulfikar said in a video published by Tribun Medan.

At the time of publication, police had neither verified Zulfikar’s account nor publicly identified Bambang’s attackers. The statement therefore represents GRIB Jaya’s version of events, not an established finding.

Wilson Colling of GRIB Jaya’s national legal division also denied the organization’s involvement.

He claimed the violence occurred among people involved in the unrest at a location separate from a community security post.

Wilson denied allegations in a viral video that GRIB Jaya members carried out a fatal assault.

“The physical violence occurred within the group of rioters at a different location from the Pam Swakarsa security post,” he said.

Wilson urged the public to avoid reaching conclusions solely because members of an organization appeared near the scene.

He said investigators should establish the truth through facts, evidence, a verified chronology and a fair legal process—not social media narratives.

The unrest broke out on Thursday night, August 27, after a demonstration near the DPR/MPR complex.
