JAKARTA, thekabarnews.com—The Jakarta provincial government will introduce a symbolic Rp1 fare across its publicly managed mass transit network on Monday, August 17, 2026. This offer will serve as a gift to residents celebrating Indonesia’s 81st Independence Day.
Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung announced the policy at the Hotel Indonesia Roundabout in Central Jakarta on Sunday, August 9.
The discounted fare will cover MRT Jakarta, LRT Jakarta and all Transjakarta services. This includes bus rapid transit, non-BRT routes and Transjabodetabek buses connecting the capital with surrounding cities.
“Therefore, as Governor of Jakarta, I have decided to present a gift. All transportation managed by the Jakarta provincial government will cost only Rp1 on August 17,” Pramono said.
The administration also included Mikrotrans in its announcement. Mikrotrans normally operates at a zero fare. Passengers should not face an additional charge unless Jakarta’s Transportation Agency issues different technical instructions.
The special Independence Day policy covers services controlled by the Jakarta administration:
- MRT Jakarta
- LRT Jakarta
- Transjakarta BRT and non-BRT buses
- Transjabodetabek routes
- Jakarta’s Mikrotrans network
The announcement does not automatically include KRL Commuter Line or LRT Jabodebek. This is because the Jakarta provincial government does not manage those rail services.
Any promotional fare for those networks would require a separate decision from their operators or the central government.
As of August 9, the administration had not published detailed technical guidance covering payment methods, exact operating hours or whether passengers must maintain a minimum electronic card balance. Travelers should check the official channels of each operator before August 17.
The city government designed the policy to encourage residents and visitors to use public transport during Independence Day celebrations. This period is when crowds and traffic typically increase around major public spaces.
Jakarta previously applied Rp1 fares during its 499th anniversary celebrations on June 22, 27 and 28, 2026. The promotion attracted 567,633 MRT passengers over the three days. This included 202,861 passengers on the first day, according to PT MRT Jakarta data.
Public-transport demand in the capital has also continued to grow. Statistics Indonesia’s Jakarta office recorded 3.85 million MRT passengers, 119,185 LRT Jakarta passengers and approximately 35.5 million Transjakarta passengers—including Mikrotrans users—in May 2026. Importantly, each mode registered year-on-year growth, according to Berita Jakarta.
The Rp1 fare gives residents an affordable travel option while helping Jakarta manage holiday traffic.
Operators will nevertheless need adequate crowd control, service frequency and clear payment instructions. These measures are required to handle the expected increase in passenger numbers.
