JAKARTA, thekabarnews.com—Acting Bank Indonesia Governor Destry Damayanti said the government had not nominated a permanent successor to Perry Warjiyo, emphasizing that the appointment process would follow the central bank law.
Destry made the statement after meeting President Prabowo Subianto and members of Indonesia’s Financial System Stability Committee at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta on Monday, July 27.
“Not yet, not yet. We are simply following the applicable rules,” Destry told reporters when asked whether the government had recommended a candidate.
President Prabowo accepted Warjiyo’s resignation on July 26 after the central bank governor stepped down voluntarily for personal reasons.
The government is preparing a presidential decree to formalize his honorable dismissal, according to the State Secretariat.
The Bank Indonesia Law requires candidates for the central bank’s Board of Governors to meet statutory integrity, professional and independence requirements.
The president nominates and appoints the governor, senior deputy governor and deputy governors with approval from the House of Representatives (DPR).
The DPR normally conducts a fit-and-proper assessment before deciding whether to approve a nominee.
“The candidate will be selected and appointed by the president with the approval of the DPR. The Bank Indonesia Law already regulates everything, so we will follow its provisions,” Destry said.
The DPR used the same statutory procedure when it approved Destry for another term as senior deputy governor in June 2024.
The process included a fit-and-proper test by House Commission XI before approval at a plenary meeting, according to the Indonesian Parliament.
Neither the government nor Destry announced when Prabowo would submit a nominee. The DPR has said it is waiting for the president’s formal proposal.
Bank Indonesia’s Board of Governors appointed Destry as acting governor during a meeting on July 26, one day after Warjiyo submitted his resignation.
Article 50(2) of Law No. 23/1999 on Bank Indonesia, as amended, requires the senior deputy governor to perform the governor’s duties whenever the position becomes vacant and the president has not appointed a permanent replacement.
“My appointment as acting governor obeys the law. If the governor becomes permanently unavailable, including through resignation, the senior deputy governor assumes the governor’s role temporarily,” Destry said.
She will lead the central bank until the president and DPR complete the statutory selection process.
Bank Indonesia will continue making decisions through its committees and Board of Governors meetings under its collective leadership structure.
Destry said BI would maintain normal operations and continue prioritizing rupiah stability, payment-system resilience and financial-system stability during the leadership transition.
“Bank Indonesia will continue to ensure the continuity of its duties and authorities in accordance with the law,” she said.
