JAKARTA, thekabarnews.com—Bank Indonesia has named Senior Deputy Governor Destry Damayanti as acting governor following Perry Warjiyo’s resignation. This move places an experienced economist at the helm of Indonesia’s central bank during a critical monetary-policy transition.
Bank Indonesia’s Board of Governors made the decision and announced it in Jakarta on Monday, July 27. Damayanti will carry out the governor’s duties until the government appoints a permanent successor through the prevailing legal process.
Warjiyo submitted his resignation for personal reasons, and the Indonesian government formally accepted it. State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi said President Prabowo Subianto had expressed his appreciation for Warjiyo’s approximately seven years of leadership at the central bank.
“The position of Bank Indonesia Governor will automatically be held by the Senior Deputy Governor, who will carry out all duties as acting governor,” Hadi said. The government is preparing a presidential decree to formally discharge Warjiyo from office. According to Indonesia’s State Secretariat, this process is underway.
Her appointment follows Article 50(2) of Indonesia’s Bank Indonesia Law. This provision requires the senior deputy governor to temporarily assume the governor’s responsibilities when the post becomes vacant and the government has not appointed a permanent replacement.
Damayanti confirmed that her position was temporary. She also stated that the appointment of a definitive governor would proceed under Articles 40 and 42 of the law.
Born in Jakarta in 1963, Damayanti earned an economics degree from the University of Indonesia. She also earned a Master of Science in Regional Science from Cornell University. Her career spans economic research, banking, government advisory work and financial regulation.
She previously served as chief economist at Mandiri Sekuritas and Bank Mandiri. Furthermore, she chaired an economic task force under the Ministry of State-Owned Enterprises. She also sat on the Board of Commissioners of the Indonesia Deposit Insurance Corporation from 2015 to 2019, according to Bank Indonesia’s official profile
Damayanti first became the BI senior deputy governor in 2019. She was sworn in for a second five-year term in August 2024. This extends her mandate through 2029, as reported by Bank Indonesia.
The leadership transition comes as Bank Indonesia works to contain inflation and protect the rupiah amid elevated global uncertainty. At its July 21–22 policy meeting, the central bank held the BI Rate at 5.75%. The rupiah stood at Rp17,885 per US dollar on July 21.
Indonesia’s annual inflation reached 3.34% in June 2026, remaining within the government’s 2.5±1% target corridor. Bank Indonesia recorded core inflation at 2.76%.
Markets will closely watch how Damayanti uses her cross-sector experience to maintain policy continuity, central bank credibility and market confidence. This process holds particular importance while Indonesia prepares to appoint its next permanent BI governor.
