Thekabarnews.com—As artificial intelligence (AI) moves beyond smartphones and computers, China’s new breakthrough hints that the next frontier could be friendship itself.
UBTech Robotics, a Chinese robotics company, formally launched its UWORLD U1 Series humanoid companion robot in Shenzhen on June 30. The company rolled out a full-size robot that can converse, recognize emotions, and offer social interaction to individuals who live alone or feel lonely.
Unlike typical service robots, which mainly serve industrial or home applications, the UWORLD U1 Series focuses on emotional involvement.
The robot is covered in a smooth silicone skin and has 88 movable joints. Moreover, it has an AI system that can recognize more than 20 human emotions.
The emotion-recognition system is about 90 percent accurate, the company says. This system allows the robot to behave more organically in conversation.
UBTech designed the humanoid robot, priced at 119,800 yuan (about US$17,650), to converse with people, respond to their emotions, and provide companionship through AI-powered interactions.
UBTech said the solution addresses a growing societal problem in China. Changing demographics are leading to more individuals living alone.
Today, the company believes, there are about 90 million people living alone. There are also 118 million older adults who are so-called empty nesters whose children don’t live at home anymore.
Demographic trends have increased interest in technologies that can provide social connection and emotional support. This is especially true for older individuals who may feel isolated.
At the product presentation, UBTech Chief Brand Officer Michael Tam garnered international attention with a bold description of the robot’s job.
Tam introduced the series by saying, “The UWORLD U1 Series will never betray you, will always be loyal to you, and will love you unconditionally.”
His comments triggered a social media firestorm, igniting a debate about the changing connection between humans and AI.
The technology was a viable solution to loneliness and to support older populations. However, others questioned the ethical and emotional consequences of relying on AI companions to meet human social needs.
Consumer interest was strong from the start. UBTech reported that customers placed more than 13,361 orders by the conclusion of the product’s launch day. This indicates strong interest in humanoid companion technology. The business plans to begin delivery of the first units in mid-September 2026.
The swift response is a sign of the broader momentum in China’s robotics industry. Corporations continue to pour billions of dollars into artificial intelligence, automation, and human-machine interaction.
Advances in massive language models, computer vision, and emotional identification have helped fuel the development of robots. These robots can now engage in more and more genuine conversations.
Developers design companion robots to complement, not replace, human relationships. Strong relationships with family, friends, and the community remain fundamental to mental health, while AI companions can serve as an additional source of social interaction for isolated individuals.
But the launch of UWORLD’s U1 Series highlights how quickly AI is moving beyond productivity and automation. It is now entering regular social life.
As civilizations cope with aging populations and changing family patterns, devices developed to combat loneliness may become more prevalent.
Although no one knows whether humanoid companions will become part of everyday life, UBTech’s latest innovation shows that emotional AI has already moved beyond a futuristic concept. Instead, this conversation has already begun.
