Thekabarnews.com—The fragile peace between the US and Iran has once again been tested. The incident happened after Washington targeted Iranian sites with military strikes. The US said Tehran had violated the ceasefire by attacking a civilian cargo ship crossing the Strait of Hormuz.
The recent military action has heightened fears over the fragile peace agreement negotiated only days ago. Moreover, the ceasefire was intended to curb hostilities. Both sides planned to engage in broader talks to end months of strife in the Middle East, according to Reuters.
The American troops carried out precision strikes on Iranian missile and drone storage sites and coastal radar installations. The US Central Command (CENTCOM) released this information on Friday, June 26.
The military said the action was a direct response to what it called an “unwarranted act of aggression” by Iranian forces against commercial vessels. This occurred in the vital waterway.
CENTCOM described the Iranian attack on the Singapore-flagged cargo vessel M/V Ever Lovely as a “brazen violation” of the ceasefire agreement. In addition, it was a threat to freedom of navigation across one of the world’s busiest maritime commerce lanes.
U.S. forces will continue to provide safe passage for commercial vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz, the command said.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important shipping lanes. It carries a large proportion of the world’s exports of oil and liquefied natural gas. Any disruption to the canal can immediately affect world energy markets. It can also affect global trade.
U.S. sources say Iranian forces fired one-way attack drones at the cargo ship as it passed near the Omani coast after leaving the channel. One drone reportedly hit the vessel, damaging it but causing no injuries. Meanwhile, other drones were allegedly intercepted.
Tehran has rejected Washington’s version of the incident, saying it was operating within its security procedures in the Strait of Hormuz. Iranian authorities also have warned that further U.S. military action could provoke further responses.
The latest clash is the first direct exchange of military attacks since the US and Iran agreed to an interim framework for a truce to ease tensions. The agreement also aimed to open diplomatic channels.
The renewed fighting could derail ongoing negotiations and broader efforts to reach a sustainable settlement in the region.
They also warn that ongoing instability in the Strait of Hormuz could lead to higher shipping costs, higher insurance premiums, and greater volatility in global oil markets.
U.S. sources, however, said Washington believes there is still a chance to save the ceasefire arrangement. They stressed that the attacks were a limited response and not the start of a wider military operation.
Diplomatic efforts are underway, military preparedness is increasing and the world community is closely watching the developments.
The flare-up underscores the fragility of the current ceasefire and the challenges negotiators face in reaching a more durable peace agreement between Washington and Tehran.
Governments and commercial maritime operators are watching the Strait of Hormuz for signs of further escalation or a return to diplomatic progress. Both countries are considering their next steps in the flashpoint in geopolitical tensions.
