Thekabarnews.com—Tulsi Gabbard has announced her resignation as director of national intelligence. She resigned after she revealed that her husband has been diagnosed with a rare form of bone cancer.
Gabbard says she will step down from her post officially on June 30, 2026.
“I would like to thank President Donald Trump for choosing me to be the director of the Office of the Director of National Intelligence,” Gabbard said in a public statement on X.
“I’m so grateful for the trust President Trump placed in me and the opportunity to lead. I must regretfully submit my resignation. My husband Abraham has only just been diagnosed with a very rare bone marrow disease,” Gabbard wrote.
In a resignation letter, Gabbard said she personally told President Trump that she was grateful for the opportunity. She served in one of the nation’s top national security posts over the last year and a half.
The announcement quickly drew national attention. Gabbard has become one of the most recognizable faces of Trump’s intelligence and national security leadership team.
Her resignation added a personal dimension to the often political world of Washington leadership
Gabbard has been a significant force in politics for ten years.
She represented Hawaii’s second congressional district in the US from 2013 to 2021 and was the first Samoan-American in Congress.
Gabbard became a national figure by being politically independent and vocal about foreign policy. She appeared in presidential campaigns and media debates and discussions about military intervention and intelligence policy.
Her nomination as director of national intelligence generated no small amount of political debate. This was because of her unusual political journey and nontraditional stances on a host of foreign policy issues.
While in office, Gabbard often discussed national security reform, intelligence coordination, and lowering geopolitical tensions.
Her resignation now puts a spotlight on the health of her family. It also highlights who will lead the U.S. intelligence community moving forward.
Rare bone cancers are one of the rarest in the world. They require highly specialized treatment, long-term care, and intensive medical monitoring.
In Washington, it’s often a bipartisan sympathy for public figures who depart political office for the health of their families.
Political observers suggest that Gabbard’s decision reflects an ongoing dilemma faced by many public officials. These officials often find themselves torn between their national duties and personal family responsibilities.
Since Gabbard’s departure, the White House has not named a replacement for the intelligence chief.
Meanwhile, it’s not just supporters on the right or the left sending messages of support to Gabbard and her husband during the medical crisis.
For many Americans, the announcement was a reminder that personal and familial struggles can still reach the highest level of government. This is true even outside of major political offices and public leadership positions.
