Thekabarnews.com—Instagram has announced a major change to its content distribution system. It will limit the reach of accounts that primarily repost other people’s content.
The update is intended to give more preference to original creators. Additionally, it aims to decrease the number of duplicate or recycled posts shown to users in their feeds, recommendations, and discovery features, the platform stated.
Under the new policy, Instagram’s algorithm will prioritize the visibility of accounts that create original videos, photos, and storytelling content. Meanwhile, pages that primarily repost viral content could see a significant drop in reach.
“Accounts that rely heavily on reposts can still gain visibility if they significantly change the original content or add meaningful value through editing, commentary, or unique presentation,” the company said.
But if you just repost it, without adding your own creative spin, it won’t get the same algorithmic boost.
The policy hits big aggregator pages that have built audiences on reposting trending videos, memes, entertainment clips, and viral content from other users.
Many of these accounts grow by reposting hacks and have millions of followers without ever posting their own content.
The change is part of a larger push by big social media platforms to incentivize original content. Additionally, it aims to safeguard the creators whose content fuels engagement on the platform.
The original creators have complained for a long time that repost pages get more reach and more chances of monetizing than the actual creators of the content.
That seems to be what Instagram is doing in response to that criticism. It also seems to be moving platform incentives toward authorship rather than redistribution.
The shift could upend growth strategies for online publishers, meme pages, and media accounts. These are groups that quickly build audience size through repost culture, digital media analysts say.
Brands and companies that rely on social media visibility may also have to re-evaluate their approach to content strategy. This is especially true if reposting has been a core part of their engagement model.
Companies may have to invest more in original production, storytelling, and creator partnerships—rather than just recycling viral trends.
The move is also in step with a broader industry trend across platforms such as TikTok and YouTube. On these platforms, authenticity and creator ownership are becoming the key focus of algorithm design and monetization systems.
With the war for creator loyalty intensifying, platforms are increasingly relying on original content as the basis for lasting user retention.
The move gives creators more visibility and arguably fairer exposure. But for accounts that live on reposts, the message is clear: virality isn’t enough anymore.
Instagram’s new algorithm revolutionizes the creator economy. Originality is no longer a choice but a must for growth.
