Thekabarnews.com—Karawang’s local health office (Dinkes), West Java, says that the number of diabetes cases among teens is rising. Changes in the way young people live are contributing to this worrying trend.
In 2025, Karawang’s Dinkes reported that 3,445 students aged 15 to 19 received a diabetes mellitus diagnosis. The number shows that the disease is becoming more common in younger people.
Head of Disease Prevention and Control of Karawang’s Dinkes Yayuk Sri Rahayu said that the trend should be a big warning for both families and schools.
“This is a big worry because more kids and teens are being diagnosed with diabetes,” she said, Thursday, April 2.
Karawang’s Dinkes attributes the rise in cases primarily to students’ unhealthy habits. Eating and drinking many sugary foods and drinks, as well as liking fast food, has greatly raised the risk of getting diabetes. At the same time, low levels of physical activity make the problem even worse.
“Many young people today eat a lot of fast food and sugary drinks and do not get much exercise.” Yayuk said that this combination greatly raises the risk of diabetes.
Diet and physical activity closely link most teen cases to type 2 diabetes. Health officials also report cases of type 1 diabetes, which is associated with autoimmune diseases.
Improper management of early-onset diabetes can lead to long-term health issues, including heart disease and other chronic conditions.
Karawang’s Dinkes has asked parents and schools to do more to encourage kids to live healthier lives. Officials say that people should eat a balanced diet, cut back on sugary foods, and get more exercise by working out regularly.
Yayuk stressed that prevention must start early, both at home and in schools. The trend is part of a bigger change in the way people live in cities. Nowadays, convenience foods and inactivity are becoming more common.
Solving the problem requires everyone to work together, including families, schools, and policymakers. Such collaboration is necessary to raise awareness and take steps to stop it from happening.
As the number of cases rises, officials are asking for stronger public health campaigns. They want to make sure that young people live healthier lives and lower their chances of getting chronic diseases in the future.
