Thekabarnews.com—Spain has officially recognized Palestine as a country. This decision has hurt diplomatic ties with Israel and shown that Europe’s stance on the Middle East conflict is changing.
The Prime Minister of Spain, Pedro Sánchez, made the announcement. This move means that Spain sees Palestine as a country and East Jerusalem as its capital.
Spain’s choice is the same as those of Ireland and Norway, which have also done the same thing. Spain’s recognition of Palestinian statehood has led to more than 140 other countries around the world doing the same.
Sánchez said the decision was “historic” and was meant to help Israelis and Palestinians find a peaceful way to end their fight.
He said that Spain wants a Palestinian state that includes both Gaza and the West Bank. There should be a safe path between the two and a single Palestinian National Authority in charge.
“We are not acting against anyone,” Sánchez said, and he stressed that the recognition is meant to help bring about long-term peace and stability in the area.
He also said that the ongoing violence and humanitarian problems make a two-state solution the most likely way to move forward.
Spain went even further by being the first European country to join South Africa in its case against Israel at the International Court of Justice. The case says that Israel killed a lot of people in Gaza. Israel strongly denies it.
Israel was furious with Spain’s choice. The move made Israeli officials unhappy. The foreign minister of the country said that Sánchez was basically backing actions that could endanger the lives of Jews.
The statement showed that people in Israel were getting more and more frustrated. More and more countries were recognizing Palestine as a state.
The diplomatic fallout shows that the world does not agree on how to handle the conflict. Some countries believe that recognition is a necessary step toward peace. Others believe it could make negotiations more difficult or tensions worse.
Spain’s choice might cause other European countries to change their minds. This is especially true since public opinion in some parts of Europe is growing more in favor of taking stronger action on the Palestinian issue.
But they also say that these kinds of choices could make things worse with Israel. It could make it even harder to make progress in already shaky diplomatic efforts.
As the conflict continues, the recognition of Palestine by Spain represents an important step in global diplomacy.
It underscores growing international pressure to find a sustainable political solution. It also reveals the challenges of balancing humanitarian concerns, geopolitical interests, and long-standing alliances.
