JAKARTA, thekabarnews.com—President Prabowo Subianto visited former president Megawati Soekarnoputri at her residence in Jakarta on Monday evening, September 28. He went to personally convey his condolences following the death of her younger brother, Guruh Soekarnoputra.
Prabowo expressed his sympathy and paid tribute to Guruh, the youngest son of Indonesia’s founding president Soekarno and Fatmawati.
The Presidential Secretariat described the visit as a gesture of respect for the late artist and his grieving family.
“During the visit, President Prabowo conveyed his condolences and paid his respects to the bereaved family,” the Presidential Secretariat said in a statement published on Tuesday.
President Prabowo also prayed for Guruh and offered words of support to his relatives.
“May the deceased receive the best place by the side of Almighty God, and may the family left behind be granted strength and fortitude,” the statement added.
Deputy House of Representatives (DPR) Speaker Sufmi Dasco Ahmad, State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi and Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya accompanied the President.
House Speaker Puan Maharani, Megawati’s daughter, and senior Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle politician Said Abdullah were also present.
Guruh died at MRCCC Siloam Hospitals Semanggi in Jakarta at 4:16 a.m. on Saturday, September 26. He was 73. His remains were later buried at Karet Bivak Public Cemetery in Central Jakarta, near the grave of his mother, Fatmawati.
Born in Jakarta on January 13, 1953, Guruh built a prominent career spanning the arts and politics.
The National Archives of Indonesia records that he founded the Swara Maharddhika performing arts group in 1977. Later, he established Gencar Semarak Perkasa.
His work combined Indonesian traditional dance and music with modern performance styles. He also created songs and film scores that became part of the country’s popular cultural heritage.
In politics, Guruh represented the Indonesian Democratic Party (PDI-P) and later the PDI-P during several terms in the House. A House profile records his service across multiple legislative periods, including from 2019 to 2024.
Prabowo’s visit came as the Sukarno family held prayers on the third day after Guruh’s death.
The occasion brought relatives and public figures together. They gathered to remember a national artist whose work linked modern expression with Indonesia’s cultural traditions.
