MEDAN, Thekabarnews.com—North Sumatra Police (Polda Sumut) have officially dismissed Kompol Dedi Kurniawan (DK) through a dishonorable discharge (PTDH). This came after an internal ethics hearing by the North Sumatra Police’s Internal Affairs Division (Propam).
The ethics panel found no mitigating factors for the officer’s violations during his service.
However, Dedi immediately rejected the ruling. He officially filed an appeal against the decision following the hearing held on Wednesday, May 6, 2026.
“There were no circumstances that could mitigate the severity of Dedi’s violations,” said Ferry Walintukan, head of Public Relations for North Sumatra Police.
“There were absolutely no mitigating factors for DK,” Ferry said.
He said investigators had uncovered multiple violations, besides the viral video that had spread widely on social media.
He said the officer had committed several disciplinary violations during his service in the North Sumatra police.
One of the key aggravating factors, Ferry added, was Dedi’s failure to cooperate with the investigation process.
“One of the aggravating factors was that he was not cooperative during the examination, based on our investigation,” he said.
The ethics hearing lasted about seven hours, starting at 10:00 a.m. and ending at 5:00 p.m.
Finally, the ethics panel led by Philemon Ginting, head of human resources of the North Sumatra Police, decided to impose the PTDH sanction.
“Yes, the result of the hearing was a dishonorable discharge (PTDH), or dismissal,” Ferry said.
However, Dedi exercised his right to appeal the decision by filing an appeal through the internal legal mechanism.
His case first came to public attention when a viral video allegedly showed him in an indecent act with a woman.
In the same video, he also used an electronic cigarette that authorities suspected contained narcotic substances. These are commonly known as “vape getar.”
The video’s release ignited public outrage and focused more attention on the police force’s professionalism and internal discipline.
Although authorities have yet to confirm the alleged narcotics content of the vape device, the video itself became a significant factor in the ethics investigation.
The case has raised broader questions about police integrity. In particular, it raised questions about public confidence in police bodies. It also highlighted the importance of upholding professional standards among senior officers.
“We need to take firm action so that the credibility of the institution can be maintained, and violations of ethics must be given serious sanctions,” said the North Sumatra police.
