Thekabarnews.com—The Indonesian finance ministry makes major leadership changes. Febrio Nathan Kacaribu has been dismissed from his position as director general of economic and fiscal strategy on April 21, 2026.
Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa confirmed the decision. He said it was part of a wider restructuring of the top leadership of the ministry.
After Febrio’s dismissal, the government replaced the director general of budget, Luky Alfirman. The ministry has temporarily appointed acting officials to the two posts. This is to ensure continuity of government operations until permanent replacements are appointed.
“We have appointed interim officials, and they have already been doing their duties,” Purbaya told reporters.
The shuffle drew public interest, particularly in light of Febrio’s strong academic and professional credentials. He was born in Sidikalang on February 27, 1978.
In 2002, he graduated from the Universitas Indonesia with a bachelor’s degree in economics. He earned his master’s degree at the Australian National University. He completed his Ph.D. at the University of Kansas in 2014.
Before entering public service, Febrio worked in academia and research. Since 2015, he has been the Head of Macroeconomic and Financial Research at the Institute for Economic and Social Research (LPEM). He is a specialist in macroeconomics, economic modeling, and public policy analysis.
Febrio joined the government in April 2020, appointed as head of the Fiscal Policy Agency. Following the reorganization of the institution, he became director general of economic and fiscal strategy, taking office in May 2025.
His tenure as director general was less than a year. However, he played a key role in shaping the country’s economic policies. The latest reshuffle means he is leaving the position. This is running in parallel with a ministry reorganization.
Based on the financial report, Febrio, as an economist and financial expert, has assets worth around Rp20.48 billion, mostly in securities.
What Febrio will do next is not yet known. Officials said they are still exploring where to put affected personnel while developing strong candidates for leadership openings.
Analysts see the shake-up as part of a broader push to boost institutional performance and adjust to changing economic conditions.
New finance ministers tend to signal a change of emphasis in the priorities of policy. This is especially true in such fundamental areas as fiscal management and economic strategy.
With new leadership, the ministry is likely to focus on fiscal stability, economic growth, and dealing with global uncertainties.
The coming few weeks will be important as the government completes appointments to key positions central to Indonesia’s economic policymaking.
