BANJARMASIN, thekabarnews.com – State-owned insurer Jasa Raharja and its subsidiary paid a combined Rp70 million (US$4,200) to the family of Reyner Falista Yosilianto. He was a passenger who died in the KMP Virgo Transport 8 accident in the Java Sea.
The companies transferred the money directly to a bank account belonging to Reyner’s wife, Mayang Widiawati.
Jasa Raharja said it completed the payment less than 24 hours after authorities identified Reyner and verified his passenger and family records.
The total payout came from two separate protection schemes. Jasa Raharja provided the legally mandated Rp50 million compensation. Meanwhile, Jasaraharja Putera added Rp20 million under a carrier’s liability insurance policy held by the vessel operator.
The additional coverage stems from an insurance agreement between Jasaraharja Putera and PT Virgo Karya Shipping. It does not form part of the compulsory Jasa Raharja benefit.
Deputy Transportation Minister Suntana expressed his condolences to Reyner’s family. He added that the authorities remained focused on finding the missing passengers.
“We are also ensuring that the identification and treatment of victims are carried out properly, including the fulfillment of the rights of victims and their families,” Suntana said during the payment ceremony on Tuesday, September 15.
Jasa Raharja President Director Muhammad Awaluddin described the rapid payment as part of the state’s responsibility. He said the payment aimed to provide certainty following a public transportation accident.
“This is part of Jasa Raharja’s commitment to ensuring reliable services and fulfilling the protection rights of victims,” Awaluddin said.
Indonesia requires public transport passengers to receive basic accident protection under Law No. 33/1964. Finance Ministry Regulation No. 15/PMK.010/2017 sets compensation for the legal heir of a passenger killed in a public transport accident at Rp50 million, according to data published by the Finance Ministry.
Jasa Raharja has also offered to cover eligible medical expenses for injured passengers up to Rp20 million each. Jasaraharja Putera’s supplementary policy provides up to Rp10 million in additional medical coverage per injured person.
The KM Virgo Transport 8 was sailing from Surabaya, East Java, to Banjarmasin, South Kalimantan, when it encountered severe weather and lost contact early on Sunday, September 13. Authorities later located the roll-on/roll-off ferry overturned in the Java Sea.
As of Monday, the joint search team had rescued 108 people and recovered six bodies. Another 129 people remained missing, according to the Transportation Ministry. The ministry said more than 600 personnel took part in the operation.
Authorities have not announced a final cause of the accident. Search teams continue working. At the same time, officials verify passenger data so other eligible victims and families can receive the protection provided under the two insurance schemes.
