Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison has launched its 5G service in Pontianak, extending the operator’s next-generation network to Kalimantan and Sulawesi. The deployment enables mobile gaming, streaming, content creation, and artificial intelligence. Customer performance will depend on local coverage, network demand, and compatible 5G devices in the city.

PONTIANAK, thekabarnews.com—Pontianak, West Kalimantan residents can now enjoy Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison’s 5G service. This is because the telecommunications operator officially launched the network in Pontianak City on Saturday, July 18.

The launch expands coverage of Indosat’s fifth-generation mobile network to Kalimantan and Sulawesi. The company had already launched 5G services in key locations in Makassar and Balikpapan.

The new service will support data-intensive activities like mobile gaming, high-quality video streaming, remote work, content creation, and artificial intelligence (AI) applications. Indosat said the same at the launch.

Actual availability and performance may vary depending on customer location, network traffic, and device compatibility.

“Cities may have different patterns of digital activity, but customers have a common need for reliable connectivity,” said Eric Wilyanto, EVP Head of Circle Kalisumapa of Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison.

“Every city has a different digital pulse, but customers want the same thing: to stay connected and enjoy freely the activities they love,” Wilyanto said at the launch.

He said customers in Pontianak could use the network to work from different locations, play games, watch entertainment, create digital content, and use AI tools. In addition, they can generate ideas or improve productivity.

“We want Indosat 5G to stay close to that digital rhythm, not only with regard to technological innovation, but also in terms of customers’ daily digital experience,” he added.

Indosat has not announced publicly the number of active 5G sites. The company has not announced the exact coverage in neighborhoods or the guaranteed speeds in Pontianak.

Customers are therefore advised to check the coverage at their location. They must also ensure their smartphones are compatible with Indosat’s 5G frequencies.

The Pontianak launch is part of Indonesia’s initiative to accelerate the nationwide adoption of 5G technology. The Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs said that the 5G coverage in 2025 has reached 13.11% of Indonesia’s population. It also covers 6.33% of residential areas. In comparison, 4G reached 98.95% of the population.

The government also completed a selection process for 700 MHz and 2.6 GHz spectrum in July 2026. The program requires successful operators to expand 5G services to a minimum of 51% of the national population within five years. Komdigi said this is a necessary requirement.

Indosat is set to hold Mobile Legends tournaments, an online K-pop challenge, and AI-assisted creative activities in Pontianak between July and September 2026.

The company will also operate its 5G First Drive program. This will enable creators and customers to livestream while visiting local culinary destinations.

Indosat’s standalone Masjid Berdaya initiative will use HiFi Air connectivity in over 160 mosques in Kalimantan.

The program features AI training for students and preachers. There will be online Quran study sessions and connectivity support for participants in the September 2026 Musabaqah Tilawatil Quran.
