JAKARTA, Thekabarnews.com—The National Police Traffic Corps (Korlantas Polri) has officially launched the Digital SIM, a big change in the driving administration system in Indonesia. Now, drivers can save and present their driver’s licenses on cell phones.
Korlantas Polri unveiled the system during the 2026 Traffic Function Technical Working Meeting held at the Auditorium Mutiara Djoko Soetono, STIK Polri Complex, Jakarta, on Friday. It took place on May 22, as quoted by Warta Ekonomi.
The program is part of the wider efforts of Indonesia to digitize public traffic documents. It also aims to modernize public services by utilizing integrated technological systems.
Director of Registration and Identification (Dirregident) of Korlantas Polri, Brig. Gen. Pol Wibowo, said the Digital SIM program was an indication that the country was heading towards becoming a nation that offered technology-based public services.
The Digital Korlantas Polri program enables users to obtain a digital version of their driver’s license from their mobile phones.
The electronic document includes details such as the identity of the license holder, SIM number, and date of expiry. It also has a QR code to be scanned for verification during traffic checks.
Authorities created the Digital SIM system to facilitate verification and to store driver data in one place.
The roadside inspections will not depend solely on the traffic officers’ physical cards.
Instead, the driver’s smartphone displays the digital SIM. The authorities can then check the license’s validity directly from the centralized database of Korlantas.
In the future, they say, a driver’s license will be less about the card. It will be more about information stored in a central computer.
The new system could mean motorists will leave their physical SIM cards at home as back-up documentation.
Korlantas is convinced the technology will improve efficiency, accelerate the examination process, and reduce the possibility of document counterfeiting.
Security is now one of the main features of the system. The digital SIM has a dynamic barcode that changes automatically every 10 seconds to prevent duplication and misuse.
Officials said the barcode technology automatically prevents unauthorized screenshots and transfers, making the Digital SIM system more secure against fraud.
The system has received a security standard certification for data protection from the National Cyber and Encryption Agency (BSSN).
The system serves as a digital identity card for drivers, but it also connects with various traffic-related services.
Services offered include online SIM renewal, license expiry notification, and connectivity with Indonesia’s Electronic Traffic Law Enforcement (ETLE) system.
Deputy Chief of the Indonesian National Police Commissioner General Dedi Prasetyo said the invention is part of a bigger effort to build an integrated public service ecosystem. The initiative aims to make services more convenient for the public.
But officials said the nationwide launch was still contingent on regulatory readiness and supporting infrastructure throughout Indonesia.
For the first phase, while the system gradually optimizes, Korlantas still recommends that motorists carry actual SIM cards as supporting documents.
Indonesia is following in the footsteps of many countries that already have digital driving license systems.
Similarly, countries such as Pakistan and South Korea have introduced digital verification systems. These measures aim to improve efficiency, reduce queues, and increase document security using QR-based authentication technology.
As Indonesia accelerates digital transformation across public services, the Digital SIM initiative could mark one of the country’s biggest steps. It moves Indonesia toward fully integrated digital traffic administration.
