Thekabarnews.com—The controversial decision to replace Iran with Italy at the 2026 FIFA World Cup has prompted a debate on politics and sport.
Paolo Zampolli, special envoy to President Donald Trump, reportedly put forward the idea. He is said to have pitched the plan to FIFA president Gianni Infantino.
“Italy has four World Cup titles, so it has the pedigree to demand participation but failed to qualify, losing out in the playoff round to Bosnia and Herzegovina,” Zampolli said.
He also said the move could help smooth over diplomatic tensions between Trump and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. Their relations cooled, according to reports, after controversial remarks about Pope Leo XIV and the war involving Iran.
“I’m betting Italy will replace Iran in the World Cup. It would be a dream for me as an Italian to see the Azzurri playing in a tournament in the United States,” Zampolli told the Financial Times.
FIFA has strongly denied it will change the teams that have qualified for political reasons. “Iran is entitled to be there, and they qualified the right way,” said Infantino.
Iran qualified on merit and is representing its people. “Players need to be able to play,” Infantino said.
Earlier, the Iranian Football Federation said it would review its participation after receiving safety concerns about the venues for the matches. In particular, it cited the potential dangers to players and fans in the United States.
The federation said its request to move the games from the United States to Mexico was due to political sensitivities. FIFA rejected the appeal and said Iran would have to play according to the official schedule.
Iran plays New Zealand on 16 June, Belgium on 22 June, and Egypt on 26 June.
Sports commentators have cautioned that political considerations could corrupt world tournaments. They pointed to recent controversies over team participation and the impact of national policies on international events.
This is consistent with FIFA’s long-standing policy of keeping football separate from geopolitical conflicts.
The plan has received a lot of attention. However, it points to how international sporting events often become entangled in political narratives. At times this produces controversies that eclipse the athletic achievements and spirit of competition.
And Italy, one of the most successful footballing nations, failed to qualify. That is the modern system of qualification for you.
Observers argue that holding international tournaments in a fair and transparent manner is essential for their credibility. Any change to the present qualifications criteria may have unintended consequences.
As the 2026 World Cup approaches, FIFA reinforces its commitment to sporting merit over politics. It ensures the tournament remains a global showcase of competition, not diplomacy.
