Indonesia’s Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) detained West Lombok Regent Lalu Ahmad Zaini during a sting operation (OTT) in West Nusa Tenggara on Monday. The KPK has not disclosed the alleged offense or identified everyone taken in. It now has 24 hours to determine their legal status after initial questioning.

KPK Deputy Chair Fitroh Rohcahyanto confirmed the operation when reporters asked whether investigators had detained the regent.

“That is correct,” Fitroh said. Both Tirto and ANTARA independently reported Fitroh’s confirmation of Zaini’s detention.

The KPK has yet to disclose the suspected offense behind the operation. Nor has it disclosed the number of people detained or the evidence investigators collected. It has not announced whether Zaini or any other detainee is a suspect.

Local reports said KPK officers sealed the regent’s office and rooms at West Lombok’s Public Works, Spatial Planning, Housing and Settlement Agency.

The KPK had not publicly confirmed the operation’s connection to any particular government project as of Monday afternoon.

Under the procedure governing caught-in-the-act operations, the KPK has up to 24 hours to complete the investigation after detaining the individuals. During this period, preliminary questioning must be conducted and the legal status of the individuals involved determined.

The KPK may release them if investigators find insufficient evidence. The KPK may name one or more detainees as suspects if the evidentiary requirements are met. All parties remain presumed innocent unless a court finds them guilty in a final judgment.

The West Lombok operation was the KPK’s 17th sting operation (OTT) of 2026. Eleven of those operations have involved regional leaders, according to a tally reported by Tirto.

The KPK began its 2026 enforcement campaign on January 9–10. In an alleged tax-audit bribery case at the North Jakarta Intermediate Tax Office, authorities detained eight people.

Investigators later named five suspects and reported recovering evidence worth approximately Rp6.38 billion. The KPK’s official statement said the alleged arrangement involved reducing a company’s assessed tax liability.

Later that month, the KPK detained Madiun Mayor Maidi. This was in an alleged extortion and gratification case involving corporate social responsibility funds and project fees.

It also detained Pati Regent Sudewo in a separate alleged extortion scheme linked to appointments for hundreds of village government positions. The KPK subsequently published official case summaries for the Madiun investigation and the Pati investigation.

In February, KPK investigators conducted further operations involving the Banjarmasin Customs and Excise Directorate General. The West Lombok operation extends that enforcement drive. Its legal basis will remain unclear until the commission releases its official findings.
