Thekabarnews.com—Artillery fire struck the Garuda Contingent’s position in Adchit al-Qusayr, southern Lebanon, on Sunday, March 29. One Indonesian peacekeeper died, and three others sustained injuries. The peacekeepers were members of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL).
Israel was sending more troops to southern Lebanon at the time of the event. Recent weeks of escalating clashes with local armed groups have fueled violence and instability. As a result, both civilians and peacekeepers are at serious risk. The incident has increased concerns about the safety of UN peacekeepers in combat zones.
Despite participating in international peacekeeping frameworks and coordinating with multinational security mechanisms, Indonesia has not fully protected its personnel from rising risks on the ground. The latest strike reflects the growing instability that peacekeepers face in the region.
The Foreign Affairs Ministry of Indonesia strongly condemned the attack. They said it put the lives of people on a UN mission to keep the area stable at risk.
Indonesia strongly condemned the attack in southern Lebanon, according to the ministry’s official statement.
“We ask all sides to respect Lebanon’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, stop actions that put civilians and important infrastructure at risk, and return to dialogue and diplomacy to stop the situation from getting worse,” officials remarked.
The Indonesian government emphasized that international humanitarian law protects peacekeepers and prohibits attacks on them during wartime. Again, officials said that everyone involved in the conflict has a responsibility to protect UN peacekeepers.
Indonesia also sent its deepest condolences for the soldier’s death, honoring the person’s service and dedication to world peace.
“We pay tribute to the fallen soldiers for their dedication to building a safer and more peaceful world and also extend our thoughts and prayers to their families and wish a full recovery to those who were injured,” the statement said.
Officials reported that the three injured individuals are receiving medical help and undergoing close supervision. Indonesian officials are still in touch with UNIFIL headquarters to find out how to bring the dead peacekeeper back home.
Indonesia continues to be one of the leading countries in sending troops to the UN for peacekeeping missions. The Garuda Contingent must do everything possible to keep the peace in Lebanon.
The most recent event shows how dangerous it is for peacekeepers to be there. Furthermore, it makes calls for de-escalation and new diplomatic efforts even stronger.
