Jakarta, Thekabarnews.com—Immanuel Ebenezer, also known as Noel and a former Deputy Manpower Minister, wants a group of judges to change his detention status. The request follows a recent decision about the former Religious Affairs Minister, Yaqut Cholil Qoumas.
Aziz Yanuar, Noel’s lawyer, said on Monday, March 23, that the decision was partly based on the Corruption Eradication Commission’s (KPK) decision to put Yaqut under house arrest.
Aziz said that Noel’s request is based on his health and religious needs. Doctors have told him that Noel needs a small surgery on his head. The procedure will keep him in the hospital for a long time and require a lot of care.
“The request also takes into account the holiday coming up,” Aziz said. He told his client that getting the right care and going to church was vital.
The KPK also said that Yaqut has been under house arrest since last Thursday. But the agency did say that health problems were not the reason for the choice.
According to KPK spokesperson Budi Prasetyo, Yaqut’s family asked the commission to look at and approve the change in his detention status. Furthermore, they did so according to the law.
The news has brought up the bigger issue of how to decide who gets house arrest. It also raises questions about other types of detention in high-profile legal cases.
Requests to move someone who is in jail must meet strict legal requirements. They are usually looked at one at a time. Authorities take into account things like health, humanitarian concerns, and fairness in the process.
Noel’s lawyers are expected to file the request officially in the coming days. Thereafter, the court will review the application and make a decision.
As the case progresses, authorities’ consistent application of detention policies, particularly in cases involving prominent political figures, continues to attract public attention.
