TheKabarNews.com—There are many scary stories about inventions from long ago, but the story of the Brazen Bull is one of the most famous. It was an execution device in Ancient Greece that combined engineering ingenuity with extreme cruelty.
According to history, the Brazen Bull was a life-sized bronze statue of a bull that was hollow inside. Around the 6th century BCE, a Greek craftsman named Perillos reportedly designed the device and presented it to Phalaris, the ruler of Acragas in Sicily. Perillos said that his creation was the best way to punish people.
The structure included a small door that guards could lock from the outside to confine a condemned person inside the hollow chamber. Next, executioners lit a fire beneath the statue, slowly heating the bronze shell. As the temperature rose, the person inside would slowly and painfully die.
People knew the device best for how it sounded. At the time, engineers reportedly constructed a network of tubes inside the bull that transformed human screams into sounds resembling a bull’s roar or bellow. Instead of hearing a person speak, people outside would hear what sounded like an upset animal’s cry. This technique turned executions into shows.
Old stories say that Perillos proudly showed Phalaris the invention, hoping to win the ruler’s favor. Instead, the demonstration ended with a shocking twist. Reports say that Phalaris told Perillos to go inside the bronze building to see how the sound system worked.
The door closed behind Perillos after he went into the room. People say that the ruler set fire to the statue, which killed the inventor. This incident was the first time someone died because of their invention. This story is now one of the most famous examples of poetic justice in ancient history.
The Brazen Bull has always symbolized humanity’s cruelty and the misuse of technology, but historians disagree on some details. The story illustrates how the pursuit of power and ambition can result in inventions intended to cause harm rather than benefit.
Historians and readers are still interested in the story of the Brazen Bull. It reminds us that using technology in new ways has always had moral effects.
