JAKARTA, thekabarnews.com—Indonesia captured the inaugural FIFA ASEAN Cup title after defeating Thailand 4-2 in a penalty shootout at Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium in Jakarta on Monday night, Oct. 5.
The hosts secured the championship after the Southeast Asian rivals finished level at 2-2 after 120 minutes of play. Goalkeeper Emil Audero sealed the victory by saving Nattapong Sayriya’s penalty, prompting celebrations among players and thousands of home supporters.
President Prabowo Subianto, who watched the final alongside FIFA President Gianni Infantino, celebrated from the VIP stand before joining the medal and trophy ceremony on the pitch.
“We are happy, we are grateful, and we are proud of our team’s struggle. They did not give up until the final seconds,” Prabowo told reporters after the match, according to presidenri.go.id.
“This is an example of a never-surrender spirit, and we can succeed,” Prabowo added.
Indonesia took the lead in the 84th minute when Dean James’ free kick deflected off Thailand substitute Iklas Sanron and beat goalkeeper Saranon Anuin. Thailand responded three minutes later as Iklas volleyed home a cross from Seksan Ratree.
Thailand played the closing stages with 10 men after Nicholas Mickelson received his second yellow card. Despite the numerical disadvantage, Peeradol Chamrasamee put Thailand ahead in the 111th minute of extra time.
Elkan Baggott restored parity five minutes later with a shot that struck the underside of the crossbar before crossing the line. The 2-2 draw sent the final to penalties. FIFA’s official confirmed the scoring sequence.
Kevin Diks, Dean James, Baggott and Shayne Pattynama converted all four of Indonesia’s penalties. Thailand’s Sarach Yooyen struck the post before Audero stopped Sayriya’s attempt to complete the 4-2 shootout win.
The result ended Indonesia’s eight-match, 10-year winless run against Thailand and made Garuda the first champions of the FIFA-backed regional competition. The ASEAN Football Federation also confirmed Indonesia’s title and Malaysia’s third-place finish.
After the final, Prabowo and Infantino presented medals to the match officials and both teams. They then handed the trophy to Indonesia’s captain, Kevin Diks. Prabowo briefly joined the players in lifting the cup during the celebration.
Asked whether the champions would receive a bonus, Prabowo said PSSI chairman Erick Thohir would determine the arrangements.
The triumph gave Indonesia a long-awaited senior regional football title and delivered a landmark achievement in the first edition of the FIFA ASEAN Cup.
