Thekabarnews.com—The National Commission on Violence Against Women (Komnas Perempuan) is expressing concern over the draft of Indonesia’s International Civil Law Bill (RUU HPI), which the House of Representatives is currently deliberating.
The panel says that Indonesian law will still be difficult to use in civil cases, even with the new rule. This stance indicates insufficient efforts to enhance the global landscape.
Komnas Perempuan head, Maria Ulfah Anshor, gave a speech at a meeting in the parliament building in Jakarta. She also stated that many other sections of the bill require modification.
One important thing that came up was how polygamy fits into the bigger picture of laws about families and marriage.
Maria said that the most important thing about being married in Islam is sakinah, which means peace. She said that having more than one person makes this kind of work harder.
Maria used verses from the Quran, like Surah Ar-Rum verse 21, to show how important it is for married people to stay calm and work together.
She also discussed Surah An-Nisa verse 3, which says that some people can only marry more than one person if certain things are true. Maria said that the verse is not a command; it is a record of what happened in the past.
“This verse shows what life was like before Islam, when men could have as many wives as they wanted. Islam set limits and fought for fairness, which is very difficult to do,” she said.
Maria believes that Islam says that married couples should always be together to get along. She said that it is still challenging for all married couples to get what they want. This supports the idea that monogamy is better for families because it makes things more fair and stable.
Many different kinds of people came to the meeting. For instance, there were clubs that ensured the safety of children and couples married to individuals of different races.
Everyone agreed that the law should be clearer and more in line with how things are now. The safety of women, children, and other groups who were in danger was the most important thing.
Komnas Perempuan also told members of parliament to make sure that the law is fair, just, and protects people’s rights. The panel warned that failing to amend the law correctly could hinder its ability to adapt to societal changes. This would mean that the law would not keep everyone safe.
The RUU HPI will probably still be a hot topic as the talks go on, especially when it comes to family law, gender equality, and how different religions affect state law. Everyone should know how to make sure that people obey the laws they write.
These deliberations will shape Indonesia’s approach to balancing law, religion, and social change in the coming years.
