Islamic tradition depicts Gog and Magog, also known as Yajuj and Majuj, as corrupt and destructive nations. The signs of the apocalypse closely correlate with their story. Both the Quran and the Hadith recount their story. It is a major part of Islamic eschatology.
There are two key parts of the Quran that talk about Gog and Magog. Surah Al-Kahf (18:94-98) depicts them as a violent group that causes trouble on earth. People urge a good king named Dhul-Qarnayn to protect them from these assaults.
He builds a huge wall out of iron and molten copper to keep Gog and Magog behind it. The Quran says that Allah ﷻ will keep this wall up until he decides to let them go.
Another reference appears in Surah Al-Anbiya (21:96-97), which foretells that Gog and Magog will break free near the Day of Judgment. As they spread chaos and ruin across the earth, their release will be a big sign that the end of the world is near.
Islamic beliefs say that their numbers are enormous. Some hadiths claim that they will use up natural resources, even emptying lakes, and that their armaments will make the sky dark. At that point, Prophet Isa (Jesus) and the upright believers will ask Allah ﷻ for help.
The Hadith says that Allah ﷻ would eventually destroy Gog and Magog by sending a disease or small worms to infect them. This will kill them without any fighting. After Allah ﷻ defeats them, He will purify the earth and establish a time of peace and justice.
Scholars have different ideas about what it means. Some believe that Gog and Magog are real clans that will appear in the future. On the other hand, others see them as symbols of widespread moral decay and immorality.
Even with these variances, the message is the same: their story is a warning against evil that goes unchecked and the certainty of divine justice.
Muslims think Gog and Magog’s rise is a key sign of the Last Day. Their confinement and release show that Allah ﷻ controls both destruction and renewal. That supports the idea that good will win out over disorder.
